Overview

For turned features on parts too large or too awkward to spin, Niigata offers the HN100D-II FC. It is the middle model of the HN-FC facing centers, built on the 1,000 mm × 1,000 mm pallet machine of the HN series and able to hold a workpiece of φ2,300 mm × 1,850 mm.

A facing center carries a sliding faceplate on the spindle head. The slide is the U axis, 130 mm (5.1 in) of radial travel as standard and 230 mm with the optional twin U spindle. A tool mounted on it sweeps a face or opens a bore to any diameter in range while the part sits still. Concentric with the faceplate is the W axis, a φ130 spindle that feeds out 300 mm (11.8 in) and takes BT50 tools for milling and drilling. Niigata's standard face plate is laid out so that the spindle can also get close to small workpieces, and small-diameter internal turning is done with a gooseneck tool.

Linear travels are 2,030 mm in X, 1,300 mm (51.2 in) in Y and 1,200 mm in Z. The pallet takes 3,500 kg (7,716 lb), with 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) optional on the NC table only. Rapid traverse is 20 m/min in X and 15 m/min in Y and Z; the W and U axes move at 5 m/min.

The spindle is modest by HN standards, as on all FC models: 2,500 min-1, 659.5 N·m (486 lb-ft) and AC 26/22 kW. What the machine sells is process consolidation. Operations that would otherwise need a vertical lathe, a boring mill and a machining center are done in one clamping, which removes the alignment error between setups.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Turning-type facing and boring on stationary parts up to φ2,300 mm × 1,850 mm
  • W-axis spindle with 300 mm (11.8 in) of feed-out and BT50 tooling
  • 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) load, 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) optional with the NC table
  • U travel of 130 mm, or 230 mm with the twin U spindle option
  • 62-tool magazine with options up to 255 tools

Limitations

  • Y travel of 1,300 mm is well short of the 1,650 mm of the standard HN100D-II
  • Spindle limited to 2,500 min-1 and 659.5 N·m
  • Rapids of 20 m/min in X and 15 m/min in Y and Z
  • The 5,000 kg rating requires the NC table
06

Best For

Large valve bodies and manifold blocks with faced ports on several sides Heavy axle and gearbox housings needing concentric bores and faces Parts up to 3,500 kg that are currently moved between a lathe and a mill Deep bores finished with the twin U spindle option

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What can the Niigata HN100D-II FC do that a normal HMC cannot?

It can make turning-type cuts on a part that does not rotate. The sliding faceplate (U axis) moves a tool radially while the head turns, so facing, grooving and taper cuts are possible. The W-axis spindle handles boring, milling and drilling in the same setup.

02 What are the travels of the HN100D-II FC?

X is 2,030 mm, Y is 1,300 mm (stated for the twin U spindle) and Z is 1,200 mm. The U axis travels 130 mm, or 230 mm as an option, and the W axis extends 300 mm.

03 How heavy a workpiece does the HN100D-II FC accept?

3,500 kg (7,716 lb) evenly distributed as standard. A 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) rating is optional and marked as NC table only. The pallet is 1,000 mm × 1,000 mm and the maximum workpiece φ2,300 mm × 1,850 mm.

04 How does the HN100D-II FC compare with the HN80E-FC?

The facing head and spindle ratings are the same. The HN80E-FC is the smaller machine, with an 800 mm × 800 mm pallet, 2,500 kg, a φ1,750 mm × 1,400 mm workpiece and faster X and Z rapids of 40 m/min and 25 m/min.
