Overview

Four bed lengths, one turning table speed: the Nicolas Correa NORMA PIT is a bed type milling machine with a turning table of 1,000 / 1,250 mm diameter that runs at 250 rpm. It is the bed type entry in the maker's NORMA multitasking family, with 1,500 / 2,000 mm of vertical travel.

The sizes are set by X travel, 2,000 / 2,500 / 3,500 / 4,500 mm, and the table load rises with them: 4,500 kg on the shortest machine, then 6,500 kg, 8,500 kg and 10,500 kg on the longest. Y travel is 1,250 / 1,500 mm. Those cross and vertical figures are the ones the NORMA lists, so the PIT is the same working volume with a rotating station in it.

Where it departs from the NORMA is the spindle. The NORMA page shows ISO-50 Big Plus / HSK-100 tapers and speeds of 4,000 / 6,000 / 10,000 rpm. The PIT narrows that to one taper, HSK-100 T, and one speed, 6,000 rpm, with power of 24 - 33 kW and torque of 840 - 990 Nm. A single interface for milling cutters and turning tools keeps tool handling simple. It also means existing ISO-50 holders will not fit.

Nicolas Correa lists a gearbox in the standard equipment, along with the automatic universal head, a Heidenhain or Siemens control, linear scales in all axes and a perimeter fence. All three axes feed at 30 m/min. With a 1,250 mm table at most and 250 rpm, this is a machine for flanges, bearing housings and valve bodies more than for large rings.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Turning table of 1,000 / 1,250 mm diameter at 250 rpm in a bed type machine
  • Four X travels, 2,000 / 2,500 / 3,500 / 4,500 mm, with table loads of 4,500 / 6,500 / 8,500 / 10,500 kg
  • Vertical travel of 1,500 / 2,000 mm and cross travel of 1,250 / 1,500 mm
  • Gearbox, automatic universal head and linear scales in all axes are standard equipment
  • 30 m/min feed on X, Y and Z

Limitations

  • HSK-100 T is the only taper listed; the ISO-50 Big Plus option of the NORMA is gone
  • One programmable speed, 6,000 rpm, against 4,000 / 6,000 / 10,000 rpm on the NORMA
  • The turning table stops at 1,250 mm diameter
  • No optional equipment list is published for this variant

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What sizes does the NORMA PIT come in?

Four, headed 20, 25, 35 and 45 in the maker's table, with X travel of 2,000 / 2,500 / 3,500 / 4,500 mm. Maximum table load follows the size: 4,500 / 6,500 / 8,500 / 10,500 kg. Every size lists the same turning table, 1,000 / 1,250 mm in diameter at 250 rpm, with Y travel of 1,250 / 1,500 mm and Z travel of 1,500 / 2,000 mm.

02 How is the NORMA PIT different from the NORMA?

It adds the turning table and changes the spindle. The NORMA offers ISO-50 Big Plus / HSK-100 tapers, 4,000 / 6,000 / 10,000 rpm and torque of 764 - 1050 - 1298 Nm. The NORMA PIT lists HSK-100 T only, 6,000 rpm, 24 - 33 kW and 840 - 990 Nm. Y travel, Z travel and the 30 m/min feeds are the same.

03 What is included as standard on the NORMA PIT?

The list reads: automatic universal head, numerical control Heidenhain or Siemens, portable handwheel, air-conditioned electrical cabinet, linear guides in the X, Y and Z axes, gearbox, hydraulic group, linear scales in all axes, external coolant with adjustable nozzles in the head, perimeter fence, direct tele-service and VIXION 4.0.

04 Is the NORMA PIT suitable for large rings?

Not really. The turning table is 1,000 / 1,250 mm in diameter. For bigger rotational parts the same maker lists the NORMA MGT with a 1,600 / 2,000 mm turning table, and the AXIA T with 1,600 - 3,000 mm. The NORMA PIT fits smaller turned parts that also carry milled faces and bolt patterns.
