The Makino U53j takes the precision build of the U32j onto a larger envelope: 550 x 370 x 220 mm (21.6 x 14.6 x 8.7 in) of travel, an 810 x 560 mm (31.9 x 22.0 in) table and a 970 x 710 mm (38.2 x 28 in) work tank. Makino describes it as offering the same precision and surface finish capability as the U32j, with larger travels.
Against the 370 x 270 mm (14.6 x 10.6 in) of X and Y on the U32j, the extra travel lets a mould plate or a progressive die section be cut in one setup where the smaller machine would need re-clamping. Z stays at 220 mm on both, so the height limit does not change. One detail runs the other way: the U32j table is the deeper of the two at 780 x 590 mm (30.7 x 23.2 in). The real gain here is the tank, at 970 x 710 mm against 790 x 610 mm on the U32j.
Makino quotes axis accuracies of 3 µm (0.0001 in) straightness and 4 µm (0.00015 in) squareness and parallelism, and surface finishes down to 0.08 µm Ra with the Crystal Circuit. The table is stationary, removing the weight shift of a moving table, the dielectric reservoir is built into the base casting for thermal stability, and chilled air circulates through the internal covers to limit thermal growth.
The 3-sided rise and fall work tank has an NC programmable height, which Makino says simplifies automation. A 3D probe system can be configured to cut setup time, H.E.A.T. technology for poor-flush cuts is optional, and the machine can optionally run wire down to 50 µm (0.002 in) beside the standard .08 to .3 mm sizes. The Hyper i control on a 24” class HD touch screen and the full-function Handbox are standard.
