Overview

The GF AgieCharmilles CUT 3000 is the flagship large-format wire EDM from GF Machining Solutions, offering the largest travel envelope in the AgieCharmilles wire EDM range. With X-travel options up to 1,500 mm (59.1 in), Y up to 1,000 mm (39.4 in), and Z up to 600 mm (23.6 in), this machine is purpose-built for the absolute largest die plates, mold assemblies, and industrial tooling.

The CUT 3000 platform is configured to order rather than built as a standard catalog machine. GF works with customers to specify travel, workpiece capacity (up to 8,000 kg / 17,637 lb), and generator configuration based on the specific application. The IPG generator delivers the same technology as the rest of the CUT line, maintaining Ra 0.10 um surface finish capability.

At this scale, thermal management becomes critical. The CUT 3000 includes active temperature compensation across all axes, with coolant circulation through the machine structure to maintain accuracy over multi-day cutting cycles. Positioning accuracy is 5-8 um depending on the travel configuration.

ICP collision protection is standard and essential at this scale. The UNIQUA HMI manages job scheduling and multi-day unattended operation. Wire range is 0.10-0.33 mm with 0.33 mm recommended for roughing on the thickest sections. U/V travel extends to +/-125 mm for maximum taper capability.

The CUT 3000 requires 25+ square meters of floor space and weighs 18,000+ kg without dielectric. Installation requires specialized rigging and foundation work.

New CUT 3000 machines are configured individually, typically ranging from $550,000 to $800,000+ depending on specifications.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Largest travel envelope in the AgieCharmilles wire EDM range, up to 1,500 x 1,000 x 600 mm
  • Up to 8,000 kg workpiece capacity for the biggest tooling in existence
  • Configured to order for exact application requirements
  • +/-125 mm U/V travel provides maximum taper capability
  • Active thermal compensation maintains accuracy over multi-day cycles
  • Same IPG generator and UNIQUA control as the rest of the CUT line

Limitations

  • $550,000-$800,000+ price limits this to the largest die and mold operations
  • 25+ square meters of floor space and 18,000+ kg weight require major facility preparation
  • Configured to order means longer lead times than catalog machines
  • 5-8 um accuracy reflects engineering reality at this scale
  • Very few service technicians have experience with this platform
