Overview

The LICO LNC42 is a compact two-axis CNC automatic lathe for bar up to 42 mm (1.7 in), with 300 mm (11.8 in) of travel on both X and Z and a 5,000 rpm spindle. It ships as a gang tool machine. An 8-position turret is an option, and so are hydraulic live tools.

X travel equal to Z travel is unusual on a lathe, and it is there for the gang plate. LICO says the dovetail X-axis slide takes gang tools, with a sub plate also available, a hydraulic tooling spindle, or the 8-position turret with coolant through it. On a gang setup the cross slide walks from tool to tool with no indexing in between, which is quick on small parts, and 300 mm (11.8 in) of X is what gives room for a row of holders.

The spindle motor is 5.5 kW (7.5 HP) continuous with a maximum torque of 42 Nm (31.0 lb-ft). Those are light figures. They suit free-cutting bar and finishing passes more than heavy stock removal, and a 165 mm (6.5 in) part held in the optional 6 in hollow power chuck will need modest depths of cut. Working feeds run from 0-6,000 mm/min (0-236 ipm).

A spindle dividing system with 48 positions is standard, and LICO pairs it with the optional hydraulic live tools for facing and cross operations. The standard controller is the MITSUBISHI M64SL, SIEMENS 802D or FANUC OiMATE. At 1,870 x 1,440 x 1,650 mm (73.6 x 56.7 x 65.0 in) and 1,800 kg (3,968 lb) the machine fits where a turret lathe of the same bar size would not.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 300 mm (11.8 in) of X travel on a dovetail slide, enough for a row of gang tools
  • Small footprint of 1,870 x 1,440 x 1,650 mm (73.6 x 56.7 x 65.0 in) at 1,800 kg (3,968 lb)
  • 5,000 rpm spindle with a 48-position spindle dividing system as standard equipment
  • Choice of MITSUBISHI M64SL, SIEMENS 802D or FANUC OiMATE as the standard controller
  • Bar feeder interface is standard, for adding the optional automatic bar feeder

Limitations

  • Spindle motor is 5.5 kW (7.5 HP) continuous with 42 Nm (31.0 lb-ft) of maximum torque
  • The 8-position tool turret, the parts catcher and the rotary tool with hydraulic system are optional accessories
  • Standard rapid traverse is 10 m/min (394 ipm); 15 m/min (591 ipm) is an option
  • Working feeds stop at 6,000 mm/min, where the LNC65 is listed at 0-10,000 mm/min (0-394 ipm)

Best For

Small bar parts up to 42 mm (1.7 in) run on gang tooling Second-operation work using the 48-position spindle dividing system Shops short of floor space that need a production bar lathe Free-cutting steel, brass and aluminium parts with light cuts

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the LICO LNC42 a gang tool lathe or a turret lathe?

Either. LICO says it can be used as a gang tool machine or with an optional 8-position turret. Standard tool holders are in the standard equipment, and the tool turret 8 pos. for the LNC42 is listed under optional accessories. The dovetail X-axis slide takes both.

02 What is the spindle power of the LNC42?

The AC spindle motor has a continuous output of 5.5 kW (7.5 HP) and a maximum torque of 42 Nm (31.0 lb-ft). Maximum spindle speed is 5,000 rpm on an ISO A2-5 nose with an F48 collet chuck.

03 Can the LNC42 do milling or cross drilling?

With options. LICO lists a rotary tool with hydraulic system as an optional accessory and describes hydraulic live tools for facing and crossing, used with the 48-position spindle indexing or C-axis. The spindle dividing system (48 pos.) is standard equipment.

04 Which CNC control does the LNC42 use?

LICO names the standard controller as either the MITSUBISHI M64SL, the SIEMENS 802D or the FANUC OiMATE. The page does not say which is the default, so the control should be fixed in the quotation.

05 What is the difference between the LNC42 and the LNC65?

The LNC65 takes 65 mm (2.6 in) bar and has a 7.5 kW (10 HP) continuous motor with 95 Nm (70.1 lb-ft), at 4,000 rpm. The LNC42 has 5.5 kW (7.5 HP) continuous and 42 Nm (31.0 lb-ft) at 5,000 rpm. Travels and outside dimensions are the same.
