Overview

The Johnford ST-70CH is the largest of the short H-frame lathes: an A2-15 spindle, 1,600 mm (63 in) of Z travel and a weight of 13,350 kg (29,370 lb).

For work of this spindle size and length Johnford has a second candidate. The ST-70CX swings 1,020 mm (40.2 in) over the bed and 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide and has 420 mm (16.5 in) of X travel, but its rapids are 12 m/min on X and 16 m/min on Z. The ST-70CH swings 920 mm (36.2 in) and 700 mm (27.6 in), travels 370 mm (14.6 in) on X, and moves at 15 m/min and 18 m/min. The difference in weight is small: the ST-70CX is listed at 13,450 kg (29,590 lb).

So the H frame is the one to take unless the part needs the extra clearance over the cross slide.

The C spindle has a 152 mm (6 in) bore, 139 mm (5.5 in) of bar capacity and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp), with 1,500 rpm from the belt-type gearbox. The tailstock travels 1,300 mm (51.2 in); its quill is Ø125 mm (4.9 in) with an MT#5 taper, which is the limit to keep in mind for heavy parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the ST-70CH and the ST-70CX?

The ST-70CX swings 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide with 420 mm (16.5 in) of X travel and rapids of 12 m/min and 16 m/min. The ST-70CH swings 700 mm (27.6 in) with 370 mm (14.6 in) of X and rapids of 15 m/min and 18 m/min.

02 How heavy is the ST-70CH?

13,350 kg (29,370 lb). The plain ST-70C weighs 13,250 kg (29,150 lb) and the ST-70CX 13,450 kg (29,590 lb), so the three frames are close in weight.

03 What is the next size above the ST-70CH?

In length, the ST-80C with 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel. The ST-80C has the same 920 mm (36.2 in) swing over the bed, a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 tailstock quill and rapids of 10 m/min and 12 m/min, and weighs 15,300 kg (33,660 lb).

04 What spindle speeds does the ST-70CH offer?

1,500 rpm as standard and 1,400 rpm as an option with the belt type gear box; 1,200 rpm with the geared headstock. Four automatic speeds are used in each case.
