Overview

Facing and boring of wide parts is what the Johnford ST-40BH is laid out for: a 381 mm (15 in) chuck, 700 mm (27.6 in) of swing over the cross slide and 370 mm (14.6 in) of X travel on a bed with 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z.

The optional 450 mm (17.7 in) chuck belongs with this frame. It leaves a useful margin under the 700 mm (27.6 in) swing for jaws and for a part that overhangs them, which the 600 mm (23.6 in) of the plain ST-40B does not offer to the same degree.

For a facing cut across a large diameter, the four automatic speeds of the B spindle are an advantage. As the tool moves inward the control raises the speed to hold the surface speed, and a wider set of ratios keeps the motor closer to full power across that range. Top speed is 2,000 rpm; power is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), or 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) with the optional motor.

Bore is 132.5 mm (5.2 in) and bar capacity 116 mm (4.6 in). Axis motors are 7 kW. The machine weighs 11,200 kg (24,640 lb) and occupies 5,132 x 2,270 mm (202 x 89.4 in).
