Overview

The DN Solutions PUMA 5100 MA is the standard-bed version of the 5100 series with a 15-inch chuck — built for large-diameter, shorter-length turning jobs. With a max turning diameter of 650 mm (26 in) and 992 mm (39 in) of turning length, it's the right machine for big flanges, valve bodies, pump casings, and similar compact but beefy parts that need serious swing capacity.

The spindle pushes 37 kW (50 hp) and delivers 2,432 Nm (1,794 ft-lb) of torque at up to 2,000 RPM. That torque number is significant — it means you can take aggressive roughing passes on large-diameter castings in gray iron or 4140 without worrying about the spindle stalling. The 15-inch chuck on the A2-11 spindle nose provides solid clamping on mid-range to large diameter stock.

At 1,105 mm (44 in) of Z-axis travel, the MA configuration saves considerable floor space compared to the LMA long-bed variant. X-axis provides 362 mm (14 in) of cross travel. Rapids are 16 m/min on X and 20 m/min on Z. The 12-station turret with 4,000 RPM live tooling covers cross-drilling, tapping, and light milling right on the machine.

The box-way construction throughout the bed and cross slide gives this machine the damping characteristics you need for heavy cuts on large diameters. At 10,250 kg (22,597 lb), it's lighter than the long-bed variants, making it more manageable for installation while still providing substantial mass for vibration absorption.

The FANUC 0i-TF Plus control handles the programming with the same interface operators know from smaller PUMAs. For shops that already run PUMA 2600s or 4100s, stepping up to a 5100 MA doesn't require retraining. The machine integrates well into fleets where FANUC is the house control. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 650 mm (26 in) max turning diameter handles large flanges, valve bodies, and pump casings
  • 2,432 Nm of torque powers through aggressive roughing on big-diameter castings without stalling
  • Standard-bed configuration saves floor space compared to the LMA while maintaining full swing capacity
  • 10,250 kg machine weight is manageable for installation while still providing solid vibration damping
  • 12-station turret with 4,000 RPM live tooling adds milling flexibility without secondary setups
  • FANUC 0i-TF Plus control maintains programming consistency across DN Solutions machine fleets

Limitations

  • 992 mm max turning length limits shaft work — choose the LMA variant for parts over 1 meter
  • 2,000 RPM spindle speed ceiling restricts surface speed on small-diameter features
  • No Y-axis standard for off-center milling operations
  • Still a large machine requiring foundation preparation despite the shorter bed
  • Price premium over the 4100 series for shops that don't need the full 26-inch swing

Best For

Valve and pump manufacturers turning large housings and bodies that are wider than they are long Flange production shops machining pipe flanges, blind flanges, and weld neck flanges up to 26 inches Job shops with limited floor space that need large-swing capability in a standard-bed footprint Oil and gas component manufacturers producing wellhead housings, BOP components, and large fittings Heavy equipment builders machining wheel hubs, bearing housings, and large structural components Shops stepping up from 4100-class machines that need more swing capacity

Frequently Asked Questions

01 When should I choose the MA over the LMA?

If your parts don't exceed about 900 mm (35 in) in length, the MA saves floor space, weighs less, and costs less than the LMA long-bed variant. Both have the same swing capacity, spindle power, and live tooling. The only difference is bed length — choose based on your longest part.

02 How does the PUMA 5100 MA compare to the PUMA 4100 MA?

The 5100 MA swings 650 mm vs 550 mm on the 4100. It also delivers more torque (2,432 vs 1,024 Nm with the 15-inch chuck). If your parts fit within 22 inches diameter, the 4100 saves money. If you need more than 22 inches of swing, the 5100 is necessary.

03 What's the typical cycle time for a large flange on this machine?

Cycle times vary widely based on material, tolerances, and finish requirements. A typical 18-inch diameter carbon steel flange with OD, ID, and face operations might run 15-25 minutes depending on stock removal. The 50 hp spindle and high torque let you push feed rates harder than many competitors, which helps on roughing passes.

04 Can I use a 4-jaw chuck on the PUMA 5100 MA?

Yes. The A2-11 spindle nose accepts hydraulic 4-jaw independent chucks for holding irregular or non-round workpieces. This is common for machining square or rectangular castings and weldments that can't be centered in a 3-jaw chuck.
