How much does the Kent CNC CSM-1640 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Kent CNC CSM-1640 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Kent CNC CSM-1640 is a 16 in (406 mm) swing CNC lathe with 40 in (1,016 mm) between centers, a 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) spindle running 50-2,000 rpm and the Acu-Rite TurnPwr control as standard. It is the lighter of Kent CNC's two 16 in models at 3,520 lb (1,597 kg), against 4,730 lb (2,146 kg) for the CRL-1640.
Two choices have to be made at the order stage. The first is the spindle drive: the base machine uses a frequency drive, and a Fagor servo of the same 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) rating is the option. The second is the control, where the Fagor 8055i is listed as the alternative to TurnPwr. An automatic 4-position electric turret is also an option.
The headstock is built for bar and chuck work of moderate size. The spindle has a Camlock D1-6 nose, an M.T. #6 taper and a 2-1/4 in (57 mm) bore, which is larger than the 2.066 in (52 mm) bore of the CRL-1640. The price of that is speed: 2,000 rpm here against 3,000 rpm on the CRL-1640. On diameters of an inch or less, 2,000 rpm holds surface speed down, so this is a machine for medium and larger diameters more than for small pins and fine finishing passes.
Between centers the lathe takes 40 in (1,016 mm), but Z travel is 33 in (838 mm), so the full length of a long shaft cannot be reached by the tool in one setup. X travel is 8 in (203 mm) and swing over the cross slide is 8.46 in (215 mm). Both axes rapid at 236 in/min (6 m/min) on 5 mm pitch ballscrews, 1.259 in on Z and 0.98 in on X. Unusually, the X servo motor is the larger of the two at 1.7 hp (1.3 kW), with 1.2 hp (0.9 kW) on Z.
The bed is 11 in (279 mm) wide. The tailstock quill is 2.12 in (54 mm) in diameter with 5.1 in (130 mm) of travel and an M.T. #4 taper. Shipping weight is 3,740 lb (1,696 kg) in a 91 x 69 x 73 in (2,311 x 1,753 x 1,854 mm) package.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 40 in (1,016 mm) between centers on a 16 in (406 mm) swing, in a machine that weighs 3,520 lb (1,597 kg)
- 2-1/4 in (57 mm) spindle bore, larger than the 2.066 in (52 mm) of the CRL-1640
- Spindle drive is a choice: 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) frequency drive as standard or a 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) Fagor servo as an option
- Acu-Rite TurnPwr control as standard, with the Fagor 8055i available as an option
- Packed size of 91 x 69 x 73 in (2,311 x 1,753 x 1,854 mm) at 3,740 lb (1,696 kg) makes it easy to place in a small shop
Limitations
- Top speed is 2,000 rpm, against 3,000 rpm on the CRL-1640, which limits surface speed on small diameters
- Z travel of 33 in (838 mm) is shorter than the 40 in (1,016 mm) between centers
- Swing over the cross slide is 8.46 in (215 mm), about half the 16 in (406 mm) swing over the bed
- The automatic 4-position electric turret and the Fagor servo spindle drive are both options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The standard control is the Acu-Rite TurnPwr. Kent CNC lists the Fagor 8055i as an option. The choice of control is separate from the choice of spindle drive, where a 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) frequency drive is standard and a 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) Fagor servo is optional.
02
Distance between centers is 40 in (1,016 mm), and Z travel is 33 in (838 mm). A shaft close to the full center distance will fit in the machine, but the tool covers 33 in (838 mm) of it in one setup. Swing over the cross slide is 8.46 in (215 mm), which sets the largest diameter that can pass over the slide.
03
The CSM-1640 has the larger spindle bore, 2-1/4 in (57 mm) against 2.066 in (52 mm) on the CRL-1640, and is lighter at 3,520 lb (1,597 kg) against the 4,730 lb (2,146 kg) of the CRL-1640. The CRL-1640 has the faster spindle, 3,000 rpm against 2,000 rpm. X and Z rapids on the CSM-1640 are both 236 in/min (6 m/min); the CRL-1640 lists 295 in/min (7.5 m/min) in Z and 196.8 in/min (5 m/min) in X.
04
The Z axis uses a 1.259 in ballscrew and the X axis a 0.98 in ballscrew, both with a 5 mm pitch. The servo motors are 1.2 hp (0.9 kW) on Z and 1.7 hp (1.3 kW) on X, and both axes rapid at 236 in/min (6 m/min).
05
The tailstock has an M.T. #4 taper. Its quill is 2.12 in (54 mm) in diameter and travels 5.1 in (130 mm), which is enough for center support and for drilling short holes from the tailstock on work held between the Camlock D1-6 spindle nose and the center.
