Overview
The DN Solutions PUMA 1000 B is the max-torque variant of the PUMA 1000 heavy-duty horizontal lathe, built for the slowest, heaviest cuts on the largest workpieces. Where the PUMA 1000 A tops out at 500 RPM, the 1000 B drops to 300 RPM and channels that same 75 kW (101 hp) into an even higher torque output of 12,040 N-m (8,880 ft-lb).
Max turning diameter is 1,000 mm (39 in) and max turning length is 2,040 mm (80 in) — same envelope as the 1000 A. Axis travels are 540 mm on X and 2,130 mm on Z, with rapids at 12/16 m/min. The 10-station turret handles heavy-duty tool blocks and boring bars. Like the A, the chuck is custom order-made to match the application.
The machine weighs 23,000 kg (50,706 lb) — 2,000 kg heavier than the 1000 A — on the same 6,595 mm x 3,210 mm footprint. That extra mass comes from the beefier spindle drive and bearings needed for the lower-speed, higher-torque configuration. FANUC control keeps the interface consistent.
The 300 RPM ceiling means this machine's optimized for large-diameter work where surface speed isn't the limiting factor. When you're facing a 900 mm diameter casting, 300 RPM gives you 848 m/min surface speed at the OD — that's plenty fast. The extra torque lets you take deeper cuts and heavier feeds on those large surfaces without stalling.
The PUMA 1000 B finds its home in shops turning the biggest, heaviest workpieces: large steel mill rolls, heavy forgings for the oil and gas sector, mining equipment shafts, and similar components where the work weighs as much as the machine. It's not a machine you'll find in a general job shop — this is purpose-built for heavy industry.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 12,040 N-m (8,880 ft-lb) of spindle torque handles the deepest, heaviest cuts on large-diameter workpieces
- 23,000 kg machine mass provides exceptional rigidity and vibration damping for heavy interrupted cuts
- Same 1,000 mm x 2,040 mm turning envelope as the PUMA 1000 A covers the full range of heavy workpieces
- 75 kW spindle motor delivers sustained cutting power for long roughing passes on big steel parts
- FANUC control and 10-station turret bring CNC automation to heavy turning that might otherwise be done on manual machines
- Custom chuck sizing ensures optimal workholding for specific heavy-industry applications
Limitations
- 300 RPM max spindle speed limits finishing surface speeds on smaller-diameter zones of the workpiece
- 23,000 kg weight requires heavily reinforced foundations and significant rigging infrastructure
- Slow 12/16 m/min rapids make non-cutting repositioning time significant on long parts
- Order-made chuck means extended lead times for the machine and no quick-swap chuck changes
- Very limited secondary market — these are specialty machines that don't turn over frequently

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Choose the B when your typical workpiece diameter is above 600 mm and you need maximum torque for deep, heavy roughing cuts. At those diameters, the 300 RPM ceiling still delivers adequate surface speed. If your work mix includes smaller-diameter zones where more RPM would help finishing, the A's 500 RPM ceiling is more versatile.
02
The 12,040 N-m of torque and rigid construction can handle hard turning on large parts, but the low RPM ceiling limits your surface speed options. For hardened steel finishing where you need specific surface speed ranges, verify that 300 RPM at your workpiece diameter reaches the required SFM for your insert grade.
03
These are typically built to order with custom chuck specifications. Lead times run 6-12 months depending on configuration complexity and factory backlog. Installation planning should start early, as foundation work and rigging for a 23,000 kg machine takes time to coordinate.
04
European heavy lathe builders like Tacchi, Berthiez, and Safop offer similar or larger capacity. The PUMA 1000 B competes on price-to-performance, with the advantage of FANUC control familiarity and DN Solutions' global dealer network. European machines sometimes offer more customization for specialized applications.
