ITM UFGG — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the ITM UFGG that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from ITM or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The ITM UFGG is a CNC flute and gunnose grinder that carries two wheels in one setup: wheel #1 for fluting and wheel #2 for the gunnose or chamfer. It takes tools from 0.2 mm (0.008 in) to 50 mm (2 in) in diameter, with a maximum grinding length of 250 mm (10 in) and an overall length of 300 mm (12 in).

The helix is set by turning the work, not the wheel. A CNC rotary table swivels from -45° to +52°; the workhead is the A axis, the rotary table the U axis, and the cross slide, longitudinal slide and column are X, Y and Z. Spiral flutes are generated by interpolating X, Y and Z while the A axis rotates. For straight flutes the U axis stays at zero and the A axis only indexes.

An integrated CNC dresser runs on two further axes, V and W, and the machine can load the next blank while the wheel is being dressed. ITM counts 7 CNC controlled axes on the machine, plus a 2-axis CNC loader or a 6-axis Fanuc robot. The linear axes move in increments of 0.00004 in with a rapid traverse of up to 98.4 in/min, and the A and U axes resolve 0.001°.

It is a heavy machine, at 10,230 kg (22,500 lbs) on a floor area of 2,690 mm (106 in) by 2,840 mm (112 in). The motor-spindles are rated up to 40 HP (29.8 kW) with HSK quick change tooling, wheels are 200 mm – 250 mm (8 in – 10 in) and wheel speed goes up to 100 m/s. Control is by Fanuc CNC with a built-in PC.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two wheels in one setup: flutes and then gunnose or chamfer are ground in one clamping
  • Integrated CNC dresser on its own V and W axes, with loading while dressing
  • Handles diameters from 0.2 mm (0.008 in) to 50 mm (2 in)
  • Motor-spindles up to 40 HP (29.8 kW) with HSK quick change tooling
  • Rotary table swivels from -45° to +52° for spiral flutes of either hand

Limitations

  • At 10,230 kg (22,500 lbs) it weighs about twice the 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs) of the UFG
  • Maximum grinding length is 250 mm (10 in) within a 300 mm (12 in) overall length
  • Dressing is only possible for standard and CBN wheels, as ITM notes
  • Rapid traverse on the linear axes is up to 98.4 in/min

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the ITM UFGG and the UFG?

The UFGG adds a second wheel and an integrated CNC dresser. It can grind the flutes and then the gunnose or chamfer in one clamping, and it sets the helix with a rotary table that swivels from -45° to +52°. The UFG swivels its wheel head from -60° to +60° instead and weighs 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs), against 10,230 kg (22,500 lbs) for the UFGG.

02 What tool sizes does the UFGG grind?

Diameters from 0.2 mm (0.008 in) to 50 mm (2 in). Maximum grinding length is 250 mm (10 in) and maximum overall length is 300 mm (12 in). Fluting wheels are 200 mm – 250 mm (8 in – 10 in) in diameter.

03 How many CNC axes does the UFGG have?

The product page counts 7 CNC controlled axes: A for the workhead, U for the rotary table, X, Y and Z, and V and W for the in-process dresser. A 2-axis CNC loader or a 6-axis Fanuc robot loader comes on top. ITM's home page describes the machine as having 9 or 13 CNC axes, which is the same count with one loader or the other.

04 How long does set-up take on the UFGG?

ITM states that setup time is usually 25 minutes or less, and its feature list gives 15 minutes as typical. Absolute encoders on all axes remove homing after power-up, and wheels are mounted on HSK quick change tooling. Loading the next blank while the wheel is dressed shortens the cycle as well.
