Price estimate
We do not have a price for the ITM UODG that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The ITM UODG is a CNC OD and chamfer grinder aimed mainly at taps. It grinds chamfers, OD relief and back taper on tools from 3 mm (1/8 in) to 50 mm (2 in) in diameter and up to 200 mm (8 in) long, and ITM lists options that stretch the range to 1 mm (0.04 in), to 200 mm (8 in) in diameter and to 500 mm (20 in) in length.
The chamfer decides how a tap starts in the hole, and it has to match on every flute. The UODG grinds it with the tool between centers on a tailstock fixed to the machine base, so the tip of the tool is always in the same place and a changeover needs little more than new program values. The operator enters tool length, OD, chamfer angle, chamfer length and relief angle. A Renishaw probe can be installed to locate the flutes automatically.
Wheels are large for the size of the work: 350 mm (14 in) maximum and 300 mm (12 in) minimum diameter, up to 80 mm (3 in) wide, at speeds up to 100 m/s. ITM also lists a multiple plunge option for taps with extra-long chamfers. Motor-spindles are rated up to 24 HP (17.9 kW).
The machine is built with 4 or 10 CNC axes and two integrated work spindles, under a GE-Fanuc control with a 15 in Panel-i screen. Loading is by automatic cassette loader or by a Fanuc robot cell working from cassettes or pallets. It stands 2,440 mm (96 in) high and its listed weight is 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Dedicated to chamfers, OD relief and back taper, with only tool length, OD, chamfer angle, chamfer length and relief angle to enter
- Wheels up to 350 mm (14 in) in diameter and 80 mm (3 in) wide
- Fixed tailstock keeps the tool tip in one place, which shortens changeovers
- Cassette loader or Fanuc robot cell for extended production runs
Limitations
- Standard range ends at 50 mm (2 in) diameter and 200 mm (8 in) length; the larger capacities are options
- Wheels must stay between 300 mm (12 in) and 350 mm (14 in) in diameter, so worn wheels are replaced early
- A specialised machine: flutes and threads are ground elsewhere
- The CNC diamond roll dresser, probe and wheel balancing are options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Chamfers and related OD features. ITM describes it as a universal OD grinding machine for chamfering straight and helical taps, right-hand and left-hand, including front and main chamfers with or without relief, OD relief, chamfered back angles and extra-long chamfers. Its software list also covers countersinks and reamers.
02
As standard, part diameters from 3 mm (1/8 in) to 50 mm (2 in) and lengths up to 200 mm (8 in). ITM lists optional ranges down to 1 mm (0.04 in), up to 200 mm (8 in) in diameter and up to 500 mm (20 in) in length.
03
The tool sits between centers on a tailstock fixed to the machine base, so the tool tip always defines the position. Because the distance from the wheel flange face to the tailstock center is known, the operator enters only tool length, OD, chamfer angle, chamfer length and relief angle. ITM gives a typical set-up time of 15 minutes.
04
With an automatic cassette loading system or a Fanuc robot work cell that uses standard cassettes or pallets. The workhead sits on a precision slide moved by a hydraulic cylinder for loading and unloading, and it can be equipped with a center, a square driver or a collet.
