Price estimate
We do not have a price for the ITM RTG that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The ITM RTG is a rotary transfer grinder: several CNC grinding stations arranged around an index table, each working on a different tool at the same time. It makes complete drills, end mills and similar tools from 1.5 mm (1/16 in) to 32 mm in diameter and up to 300 mm (12 in) long, in one clamping.
The arithmetic is what sells it. Because every station grinds at once, the time per tool is the longest single operation plus a 3-second index, not the sum of all operations. A single machine that finishes a tool in one clamping normally has to add the operations together, and a cell of separate machines is fast but reclamps the tool at each step. The RTG gives the output of the cell and keeps the single clamping.
ITM lists up to 5 workstations and 1 loading and unloading station, which can be arranged for OD, flute, flat, relief, land and point grinding, or for polishing, honing, milling and marking. Tools are held in collet workheads mounted vertically on the index table with the collet facing downward, and can be ground in stationary precision bushings or between centers. Fluting and OD-relief stations take wheels of 200 mm – 250 mm (8 in – 10 in), end work stations 100 mm – 150 mm (4 in – 6 in).
With motor-spindles of up to 40 HP (29.8 kW), the machine weighs 10,700 kg (23,500 lbs) and occupies 2,870 mm (113 in) by 3,098 mm (122 in). Each station can have its own CNC diamond roll dresser as an option. Loading is by cassette loader, hopper or robot, and the control is a Fanuc CNC with a built-in PC.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Cycle time per tool equals the longest single operation plus a 3-second index
- Complete tools in one clamping across up to 5 workstations
- Stations can be configured for flutes, OD relief, points and flats, or for polishing, honing, milling and marking
- Motor-spindles up to 40 HP (29.8 kW) with HSK quick change tooling
Limitations
- Maximum tool diameter is 32 mm, smaller than the 50 mm (2 in) that the UFG reaches in its largest size
- At 10,700 kg (23,500 lbs) it needs planned rigging and floor space of 2,870 mm (113 in) by 3,098 mm (122 in)
- A machine for mass production: the station layout is designed around a family of tools
- Dressers, wheel balancing and loaders are listed as options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
All stations grind at once, each on a different tool. After every cycle the table indexes and each tool moves to the next station. ITM states that production time is equal to the longest single operation cycle time plus a 3-second index time, so splitting the work over more stations shortens the time per tool.
02
The feature list gives up to 5 workstations and 1 loading/unloading station. ITM's description of the standard machine mentions 3 grinding stations, 6 collet workheads and up to 20 + 6 CNC axes, so the count depends on the configuration that is ordered.
03
Diameters from 1.5 mm (1/16 in) to 32 mm and overall lengths up to 300 mm (12 in). Fluting and OD-relief wheels are 200 mm – 250 mm (8 in – 10 in), end work wheels 100 mm – 150 mm (4 in – 6 in), and wheel speed is up to 100 m/s.
04
ITM lists a cassette loader with single or double gripper, a hopper loader and unloader, and a robot loader. In the maker's description a Fanuc robot loads a tool at the first station while grinding is already in process at the later ones. A special loading mechanism is shown for long tools.
