Price estimate
We do not have a price for the EMAG UG 400 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The EMAG UG 400 is a universal cylindrical grinding machine with 400 mm (16 in) between centers and a 175 mm (7 in) center height. It grinds outside diameters with a 500 x 40 (50ROS) x 203.2 mm (20 x 1.5 (50ROS) x 8 in) wheel on a 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) spindle at a peripheral speed of 60 m/s, and bores with a high-frequency internal spindle that runs from 20,000 - 125,000 1/min and takes 50 mm (2 in) wheels.
Both spindles sit on a B-axis that swivels from -15° to +225° with 0.0001° resolution and ±2 arc seconds repeatability, taking 8 s for 180°. That range lets one clamping cover an outside diameter, a face at an angle and a bore. Grinding length is 400 mm (16 in) with the straight wheel and 240 mm (9 in) with an angular wheel, so shoulder and face work on angled setups has to fit within the shorter figure. Z is a 640 mm (25 in) table stroke and X a 320 mm (12.5 in) wheel slide stroke, both programmed in 0.0001 mm increments.
Workholding is sized for small and medium parts. Between centers the limit is 60 kg (132 lb); in a chuck the clamping diameter stops at 100 mm (4 in). The workhead has an MT4 taper, stepless speed of 30 - 800 1/min, 12 Nm (8.8 ft-lbs) of torque and swivels 0 to +30° for steep tapers, while the table itself swivels 8.5°. The MT4 tailstock has a 60 / 40 mm (2 / 1.5 in) quill diameter / stroke and micro taper correction of ±0.040 mm.
Dressing is done on the workpiece head with dressing blades for the external wheel and by a swing-arm unit on the table for the internal wheel. The control is FANUC 0i-TF Plus; the FANUC 31 B Plus is the option for out-of-round grinding. The UG Series as a whole runs to 1,500 mm (59 in) of grinding length and an 11 kW spindle, so the UG 400 is the entry point for shorter work.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- B-axis from -15° to +225° with ±2 arc seconds repeatability puts external and internal grinding in one clamping
- Internal grinding spindle runs 20,000 - 125,000 1/min on a 120 mm (5 in) HF spindle mount
- Wheel slide programmed in 0.0001 mm increments on X and Z
- Workhead swivels 0 to +30° and the table 8.5°, with ±0.040 mm micro taper correction at the tailstock
- Stepless workhead speed of 30 - 800 1/min
Limitations
- Workpiece weight between centers is limited to 60 kg (132 lb)
- Chuck clamping diameter stops at 100 mm (4 in)
- With an angular wheel the grinding length drops from 400 mm (16 in) to 240 mm (9 in)
- Out-of-round grinding needs the optional FANUC 31 B Plus control
- Workhead torque is 12 Nm (8.8 ft-lbs), modest for large chucked parts

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Yes. An internal grinding spindle on a 120 mm (5 in) HF spindle mount runs 20,000 - 125,000 1/min with 50 mm (2 in) wheels, and the B-axis swings it into position. Internal wheels are dressed by a swing-arm unit on the table.
02
60 kg (132 lb) between centers. In a chuck the clamping diameter is limited to 100 mm (4 in), and the workhead delivers 12 Nm (8.8 ft-lbs), so heavy or long-overhang chucked parts need checking with EMAG.
03
It is the 400 mm length model. The UG Series covers grinding lengths of 400 - 1,500 mm (15.7 - 59.1 in), center heights of 175 / 225 mm (7 / 9 in) and OD spindle power of 7.5 / 11 kW (10 / 15 hp). The UG 400 has the 175 mm (7 in) center height and the 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) spindle.
04
FANUC 0i-TF Plus as standard. For out-of-round grinding the FANUC 31 B Plus is listed as an option, so a buyer who needs non-round profiles should specify it at order.
05
The external wheel is 500 x 40 (50ROS) x 203.2 mm (20 x 1.5 (50ROS) x 8 in) and runs at a peripheral speed of 60 m/s on a 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) spindle. It is dressed with blades on the workpiece head.
