Price estimate
We do not have a price for the ITM UFTG that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The ITM UFTG is a compact CNC flute and thread grinder from ITM's miniature tap series, built for very small taps and screws. Maximum part diameter is 6 mm (0.25 in), part length runs from 40 mm (1.5 in) to 100 mm (4 in), and the standard grinding wheel is only 100 mm (4 in) in diameter.
The design answers the problems of grinding tiny threads. All main axes are housed inside the machine base, away from grinding fluid, grit and heat, and the Z axis has a coolant trap that isolates the grinding area from them. The pivoting U-axis is fully sealed and has no conventional worm gear, and an adjustable A-axis is mounted on it to suit different workpiece lengths. The wheelhead rides on an oil cushion, which ITM says reduces static friction and damps grinding vibration.
The CNC wheel head swivels from -60° to +60°, and the motor-spindles are rated up to 40 HP (29.8 kW) with HSK quick change tooling. Wheels may be diamond, CBN or conventional and run at up to 80 m/s; a 200 mm (8 in) wheel is optional. Parts are held between centers, in a collet against the tailstock, or in a collet with a steady rest for small diameters.
Control is by Fanuc CNC with a built-in PC, with up to 15 interpolating axes and absolute encoders. The machine is 1,900 mm (75 in) high, 1,800 mm (71 in) wide and 1,220 mm (48 in) deep, and ITM lists its weight as 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs). A Fanuc robot is shown for tool exchange.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Built for miniature work: maximum part diameter of 6 mm (0.25 in) and a 100 mm (4 in) standard wheel
- Main axes are housed in the machine base, isolated from coolant, grit and heat
- Sealed U-axis without a worm gear, and an oil cushioned wheelhead that damps vibration
- Fluting and thread grinding brought together in one machine design
- Up to 15 interpolating axes on a Fanuc CNC, all absolute
Limitations
- Part diameter stops at 6 mm (0.25 in) and part length at 100 mm (4 in)
- Parts shorter than 40 mm (1.5 in) are below the stated minimum length
- The standard wheel is 100 mm (4 in); the 200 mm (8 in) wheel is an option
- The footprint is small at 1,800 mm (71 in) wide, but the listed weight is still 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The specification list gives a maximum part diameter of 6 mm (0.25 in), a maximum length of 100 mm (4 in) and a minimum length of 40 mm (1.5 in). ITM places the machine in its miniature tap series, aimed at the smallest taps and screws. The page prints the minimum diameter inconsistently, so confirm it with ITM for your part.
02
ITM describes three workholding mechanisms. Parts can be held between centers for maximum concentricity. A collet can hold the part against the tailstock center. For small diameter tools, a collet assembly used with a steady rest gives the additional support that is needed.
03
The standard maximum wheel diameter is 100 mm (4 in), with 200 mm (8 in) as an option. Diamond, CBN and conventional wheels can be used at speeds up to 80 m/s. The spindles take HSK quick change tooling, and a CNC diamond roll dresser is an option.
04
A Fanuc CNC with a built-in PC. ITM lists up to 15 interpolating axes, all absolute so that no homing is needed, part probing with a Renishaw probe and automatic dressing compensation. The twin spindle wheelhead indexes with a resolution of 0.001 degree.
