Price estimate
We do not have a price for the ITM PPG that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The ITM PPG is a CNC peel and plunge grinder for the outside profile of round tools and blanks. It grinds diameters from 2.5 mm (0.1 in) to 50 mm (2 in), or up to 180 mm (7 in) when plunge grinding, on parts up to 350 mm (14 in) long, using a 350 mm (14 in) wheel at up to 150 m/s.
Peel grinding uses a narrow wheel, here 3 – 6 mm wide, that removes the stock in a pass along the part, much as a turning tool would. One wheel can therefore generate steps, tapers and profiles that would otherwise need several formed wheels. For final size and finish the PPG can change to plunge grinding with a wheel up to 30 mm wide, and both kinds of wheel can be arranged for use in one set-up.
Parts are clamped between centers and driven without dogs. The centers sit on two integrated work spindles that turn the part at up to 5,000 rpm, and the workhead pressure is adjusted by CNC. ITM quotes 1-micron repeatability for this arrangement. A built-in measuring gage can check a diameter before, during or after grinding.
The machine has 6 or 11 CNC axes and water-cooled direct drive motor-spindles of up to 24 HP (17.9 kW), under a GE-Fanuc control with a built-in PC. Diamond and CBN wheels are dressed with silicon carbide and probed automatically afterwards. For unattended work ITM offers a cassette loader or a robotic pick-and-place system, with up to 300 pieces pre-loaded. Listed weight is 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- One narrow peel wheel generates steps, tapers and profiles on parts from 2.5 mm (0.1 in) to 50 mm (2 in)
- Wheel speed up to 150 m/s on a 350 mm (14 in) wheel
- Parts are driven between centers without dogs at up to 5,000 rpm, so the full length is ground in one clamping
- Built-in measuring gage for pre-, in- and post-process checks
- Peel and plunge wheels can be arranged for use in one set-up
Limitations
- Only one diameter can be gaged per set-up, as ITM states
- Diameters above 50 mm (2 in) are reached only by plunge grinding, up to 180 mm (7 in)
- Maximum overall part length is 350 mm (14 in)
- The cassette loader, CNC diamond roll dresser and wheel balancing are options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
It is OD grinding with a narrow wheel, 3 – 6 mm wide on this machine, that takes the stock off in a pass along the part. ITM likens the high velocity process to turning. One wheel can produce cylindrical and tapered sections with multiple steps or profiles, in carbide and in HSS, at wheel speeds up to 150 m/s.
02
Diameters from 2.5 mm (0.1 in) to 50 mm (2 in) for peel grinding, and up to 180 mm (7 in) with plunge grinding. Maximum overall length is 350 mm (14 in). The wheel is 350 mm (14 in) in diameter, and a plunge grinding wheel can be up to 30 mm wide.
03
Parts run between high precision centers, for which ITM quotes 1-micron repeatability, and the full length is ground without re-clamping. The built-in measuring gage works before, during or after the process. ITM notes that only one diameter can be gaged per set-up, so the gage is put on the most critical one.
04
The FPG is ITM's form and peel grinder, shown on the same page with the same specification list. The options marked for the FPG are a wheel pivot CNC axis for grinding angles on blanks, a synchronized chuck that transfers parts from chuck to chuck, and end machining with peel and plunge grinding.
