ITM UFG — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the ITM UFG that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from ITM or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options

Overview

The ITM UFG is a CNC flute grinder for round cutting tools, built in three sizes on one platform: the 12-UFG for diameters of 1 mm to 12 mm, the 25-UFG for 3 mm to 25 mm (1/8 in to 1 in) and the 50-UFG for 3 mm to 50 mm (1/8 in to 2 in). Overall tool length is 300 mm (12 in), or up to 400 mm (16 in) with special tooling.

Fluting is the slowest step in making a tap, drill or end mill, and the UFG is built around removing that stock quickly. The wheel spindle is a closed loop direct drive motor-spindle of up to 40 HP (29.8 kW) with HSK quick change tooling and a chiller of its own. Fluting wheels are 200 mm – 250 mm (8 in – 10 in) in diameter and may be diamond, CBN or conventional abrasive, at wheel speeds up to 100 m/s.

The CNC wheel head swivels from -60° to +60°, which covers straight flutes, spiral flutes and gunnose points in one chucking. Tools are driven from a collet or a square holder and supported by a tailstock. ITM gives the X and Z axes an incremental movement of 0.00004 in and a rapid traverse of up to 98.4 in/min, and the A and U axes a resolution of 0.001°.

The control is a Fanuc CNC with a built-in PC, and absolute encoders on all axes mean no homing after power-up. Blanks are loaded by hand, by an optional cassette loader or by a six-axis Fanuc robot. A CNC diamond roll dresser is an option, though ITM notes that dressing is only possible for standard and CBN wheels. The machine stands 2,440 mm (96 in) high and weighs 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Motor-spindle of up to 40 HP (29.8 kW) with HSK quick change wheel mounting
  • Three sizes cover tool diameters from 1 mm to 50 mm (2 in), and up to 200 mm (8 in) with special tooling on the 50-UFG
  • Wheel head swivels from -60° to +60° under CNC for straight, spiral and gunnose flutes in one chucking
  • Absolute encoders on all axes; ITM states a typical set-up time of 15 minutes
  • Wheel speeds up to 100 m/s with diamond, CBN or conventional abrasives

Limitations

  • A fluting machine: ITM notes that second and third operations such as OD relief may need separate set-ups
  • Overall tool length is limited to 300 mm (12 in), or 400 mm (16 in) with special tooling
  • Rapid traverse on X and Z is up to 98.4 in/min, so non-cutting moves are slow
  • The diamond roll dresser, cassette loader, robot, probe and wheel balancing are all options
06

Best For

High-volume fluting of taps: straight flutes, spiral flutes and spiral points Fluting drills, end mills and reamers in carbide or HSS up to 50 mm (2 in) Annular hole cutters and other fluted round tools Lines where fluting is separated from OD and point grinding

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What tool sizes does the ITM UFG cover?

It depends on the version. The 12-UFG takes diameters of 1 mm to 12 mm, the 25-UFG 3 mm to 25 mm (1/8 in to 1 in), and the 50-UFG 3 mm to 50 mm (1/8 in to 2 in), or up to 200 mm (8 in) with special tooling. Maximum overall length is 300 mm (12 in), or up to 400 mm (16 in) with special tooling.

02 How powerful is the UFG grinding spindle?

ITM lists closed loop direct drive motor-spindles of up to 40 HP (29.8 kW), with HSK quick change tooling and a closed loop chiller so that the spindle can run at its maximum power. Fluting wheels are 200 mm – 250 mm (8 in – 10 in) in diameter and run at up to 100 m/s.

03 Which flute forms can the UFG grind?

Straight flutes, right and left hand spiral flutes and gunnose or spiral points, in one chucking. The wheel head swivels from -60° to +60° under CNC to set the helix. The application list on the page names taps, end mills, reamers and annular hole cutters among others.

04 How is the UFG loaded and controlled?

Tool blanks are loaded manually, by an optional automatic cassette loader or by a six-axis Fanuc robot. The control is a Fanuc CNC with a built-in PC. All axes have absolute encoders, so the machine does not need to be homed after power-up, and ITM gives a typical set-up time of 15 minutes.
