Overview

The Hwacheon C1 is a compact Y-axis turn-mill with A2-5 spindle noses, a 6 in chuck (8 in optional), Ø51 mm (Ø2.0 in) bar capacity and 6,000 rpm on both the main and the sub spindle. It comes in two versions: the YMC, with Y axis, milling and a tailstock, and the YSMC, with Y axis, milling and a sub-spindle. Maximum turning diameter is Ø530 mm (Ø20.9 in) over a Ø730 mm (Ø28.7 in) swing, and maximum turning length is 591 mm (23.3 in).

The tooling is what sets it apart from a plain turret lathe. An 18-station turret, taking BMT 55 or CAPTO C4 plus BMT 55 and indexing at 0.467 s/step, is paired with a 12-tool CAPTO C4 magazine. Driven tools run to 4,000 rpm on 5.5 / 3.7 kW (7.4 / 5 HP), the Y axis gives ±50 mm (±2.0 in) and the C axis indexes in 0.0001° steps, enough for cross holes, flats and off-centre slots in the same setup. Magazine tools are limited to Ø40 mm (Ø1.6 in) and 7 kgf (15 lb).

The main spindle is rated 11 / 7.5 kW (15 / 10 HP) through a Ø62 mm (Ø2.4 in) bore. On the YSMC the sub-spindle gives 7.5 / 5.5 kW (10 / 7.4 HP), holds a 6 in chuck and passes Ø45 mm (Ø1.8 in) bar, turning up to Ø410 mm (Ø16.1 in) over 579.5 mm (22.8 in). Because that bar capacity is close to the main spindle's, bar parts can be transferred and finished on the back almost at full size. The YMC instead carries a tailstock with a Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) quill, 750 mm (29.5 in) of travel and an MT #4 taper.

The larger Hwacheon C2 offers an 8 in chuck, Ø65 mm (Ø2.6 in) bar and 15 / 11 kW (20 / 15 HP), but its sub-spindle takes only Ø29 mm (Ø1.1 in) bar. For smaller bar work done on both ends, the C1 is the better match. With the part catcher in use, turning diameter is limited to Ø250 mm (Ø9.8 in). The machine needs 40 kVA, a 200 L coolant tank and 3,555 x 2,493 mm (140.0 x 98.1 in) of floor, weighs 10,500 kgf (23,148 lb) and runs Fanuc 0i-TF Plus.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Main and sub spindle both run to 6,000 rpm on A2-5 noses
  • YSMC sub-spindle passes Ø45 mm (Ø1.8 in) bar against Ø51 mm (Ø2.0 in) on the main, so back-side work runs almost at full bar size
  • 18-station turret plus a 12-tool CAPTO C4 magazine, with 0.467 s/step turret indexing
  • ±50 mm (±2.0 in) Y axis, 0.0001° C axis and 4,000 rpm driven tools for off-centre milling and drilling
  • Compact 3,555 x 2,493 mm (140.0 x 98.1 in) footprint on a 40 kVA supply

Limitations

  • Driven tools are limited to 4,000 rpm and 5.5 / 3.7 kW (7.4 / 5 HP), slow for small end mills
  • Main spindle power of 11 / 7.5 kW (15 / 10 HP) is below the 15 / 11 kW (20 / 15 HP) of the Hwacheon C2, which limits heavy roughing
  • With the part catcher, turning diameter is limited to Ø250 mm (Ø9.8 in)
  • Tailstock and sub-spindle are split between versions: the YMC has the tailstock, the YSMC the sub-spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the C1 YMC and YSMC?

Both have the Y axis and milling. The YMC adds a tailstock with a Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) quill, 750 mm (29.5 in) of travel and an MT #4 taper. The YSMC replaces it with a sub-spindle: A2-5 nose, 6 in chuck, 6,000 rpm, 7.5 / 5.5 kW (10 / 7.4 HP) and Ø45 mm (Ø1.8 in) bar capacity, turning up to Ø410 mm (Ø16.1 in) and 579.5 mm (22.8 in).

02 How does the C1 compare with the Hwacheon C2?

The Hwacheon C2 is the bigger machine, with an 8 in chuck (10 in optional), A2-6 nose, 5,000 rpm, Ø65 mm (Ø2.6 in) bar, 15 / 11 kW (20 / 15 HP) and Ø630 mm (Ø24.8 in) turning diameter. The C1 runs a 6 in chuck (8 in optional) to 6,000 rpm with Ø51 mm (Ø2.0 in) bar. On the YSMC the C1 sub-spindle takes Ø45 mm (Ø1.8 in) bar, where the Hwacheon C2 sub-spindle takes Ø29 mm (Ø1.1 in).

03 What milling can the C1 do?

Driven tools run to 4,000 rpm with 5.5 / 3.7 kW (7.4 / 5 HP). The Y axis travels ±50 mm (±2.0 in) and the C axis indexes in 0.0001° steps, so cross holes, flats, keyways and off-centre features can be cut without a second setup. Magazine tools can be up to Ø40 mm (Ø1.6 in) and 7 kgf (15 lb).

04 What tooling does the C1 turret use?

The 18-station turret takes BMT 55, or CAPTO C4 combined with BMT 55, with tool sizes of □25 x Ø40 mm or CAPTO C4, and indexes at 0.467 s/step. A separate 12-tool CAPTO C4 magazine adds capacity, with tools up to 100 / 145 mm (3.9 / 5.7 in) long in X / Z, measured from the tool shank centre.

05 What does the C1 need on site?

A 40 kVA supply, 3,555 x 2,493 mm (140.0 x 98.1 in) of floor and 2,300 mm (90.6 in) of height. The coolant tank holds 200 L and the machine weighs 10,500 kgf (23,148 lb).
