Overview

The Hwacheon C2 is the larger of the two C-series turn-mills: an 8 in chuck (10 in optional) on an A2-6 nose, Ø65 mm (Ø2.6 in) bar through a Ø76 mm (Ø3.0 in) bore, and a main spindle rated 15 / 11 kW (20 / 15 HP) that runs to 5,000 rpm. It turns up to Ø630 mm (Ø24.8 in) over a Ø730 mm (Ø28.7 in) swing and up to 557 mm (21.9 in) long.

The two versions pull the machine in different directions. The YMC carries a tailstock with a Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) quill, 705 mm (27.8 in) of travel and an MT #5 centre, for chucked and centre-supported work at the full chuck size. The YSMC carries a sub-spindle that is much smaller than the main one: A2-5 nose, 6 in chuck, 6,000 rpm and 7.5 / 5.5 kW (10 / 7.4 HP), with a Ø38 mm (Ø1.5 in) bore and Ø29 mm (Ø1.1 in) bar capacity. It suits flanges and hubs gripped on a smaller diameter for second-side work, but bar thicker than Ø29 mm cannot pass through it. On the sub-spindle the turning envelope is Ø510 mm (Ø20.1 in) by 569 mm (22.4 in).

Milling comes from an 18-station turret (BMT 55, or CAPTO C4 with BMT 55) indexing at 0.467 s/step, a 12-tool CAPTO C4 magazine and driven tools running to 4,000 rpm on 5.5 / 3.7 kW (7.4 / 5 HP). X travel is 360 mm (14.2 in), Z 700 mm (27.6 in) and Y ±60 mm (±2.4 in), and the C axis indexes in 0.0001° steps. Magazine tools may be 150 mm (5.9 in) long in X, which leaves room for longer drills across the part.

The Hwacheon C1 runs a 6 in chuck to 6,000 rpm with Ø51 mm (Ø2.0 in) bar and 11 / 7.5 kW (15 / 10 HP); the C2 gives up that speed for chuck size, bar capacity and power. A part catcher handles parts up to Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in). Plan for 55 kVA, a 230 L coolant tank, 3,610 x 2,784 mm (142.1 x 109.6 in) of floor and 2,360 mm (92.9 in) of height; the machine weighs 10,800 kgf (23,810 lb) and runs Fanuc 0i-TF Plus.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø65 mm (Ø2.6 in) bar capacity and 15 / 11 kW (20 / 15 HP) on the main spindle
  • 8 in chuck as standard with a 10 in option, turning up to Ø630 mm (Ø24.8 in)
  • ±60 mm (±2.4 in) of Y travel and 360 mm (14.2 in) of X for off-centre milling
  • Part catcher accepts parts up to Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in)
  • YMC tailstock with an MT #5 centre, Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) quill and 705 mm (27.8 in) of travel

Limitations

  • The YSMC sub-spindle passes only Ø29 mm (Ø1.1 in) bar, so larger bar parts cannot be fed through it
  • Main spindle tops out at 5,000 rpm, below the 6,000 rpm of the Hwacheon C1
  • Driven tools are limited to 4,000 rpm and 5.5 / 3.7 kW (7.4 / 5 HP)
  • Maximum turning length of 557 mm (21.9 in) rules out long shafts

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the C2 differ from the Hwacheon C1?

The C2 has an 8 in chuck (10 in optional), A2-6 nose, Ø65 mm (Ø2.6 in) bar and 15 / 11 kW (20 / 15 HP), turning up to Ø630 mm (Ø24.8 in) at 5,000 rpm. The Hwacheon C1 has a 6 in chuck (8 in optional), A2-5 nose, Ø51 mm (Ø2.0 in) bar and 11 / 7.5 kW (15 / 10 HP) at 6,000 rpm. The Hwacheon C1 sub-spindle on the YSMC passes Ø45 mm (Ø1.8 in) bar, against Ø29 mm (Ø1.1 in) on the C2.

02 What can the C2 YSMC sub-spindle handle?

It has an A2-5 nose, a 6 in chuck, 6,000 rpm and 7.5 / 5.5 kW (10 / 7.4 HP). Its bore is Ø38 mm (Ø1.5 in) and bar capacity Ø29 mm (Ø1.1 in). Parts can be turned on it up to Ø510 mm (Ø20.1 in) and 569 mm (22.4 in) long, which suits second-side work held on a smaller diameter rather than full-size bar.

03 How much Y-axis travel does the C2 have?

±60 mm (±2.4 in), with 360 mm (14.2 in) of X and 700 mm (27.6 in) of Z. Rapids are 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on X and Z and 15 m/min (591 ipm) on Y, and the C axis indexes in 0.0001° steps for positioned milling and drilling.

04 What tools fit the C2 magazine?

The 12-tool magazine takes CAPTO C4 tools up to Ø40 mm (Ø1.6 in) and 7 kgf (15 lb). Tool length is limited to 150 mm (5.9 in) in X and 145 mm (5.7 in) in Z, measured from the tool shank centre. The 18-station turret alongside it indexes at 0.467 s/step.

05 What are the C2 site requirements?

55 kVA of power, 3,610 x 2,784 mm (142.1 x 109.6 in) of floor and 2,360 mm (92.9 in) of height. The coolant tank holds 230 L and the machine weighs 10,800 kgf (23,810 lb).
