Overview
The Citizen Miyano BNA-42GTY is the most versatile machine in the BNA-42 family, combining a dual-spindle architecture with a turret, gang tool post, and dual Y-axes for up to 45 tool positions and 3-tool simultaneous cutting. The GTY designation — Gang Tool, Turret, Y-axis — signals a machine built for maximum tooling density and minimum cycle times on complex small parts from 42 mm bar stock.
The main spindle (SP1) reaches 6,000 RPM with 11/7.5 kW (15/10 hp), while the sub-spindle (SP2) runs to 5,000 RPM with 5.5/3.7 kW (7.5/5 hp). Both spindles accept 42 mm bar stock. The 8-station turret (with half-indexing for 16 effective positions) serves the main spindle, while a gang tool post mounted on the opposite side provides 3 front turning positions and 3 revolving tool positions. A separate back ID tool station holds 5 tools for sub-spindle internal machining.
The machine features 9 controlled axes: Z1, X1, Y1 on the turret; Z2, X2, Y2 on the sub-spindle; and Z3, X3 on a third axis group. Y1 travel of 260 mm and Y2 travel of 70 mm provide generous off-center machining range on both turret and sub-spindle sides. The turret gang revolving tools run at 1.0 kW and 1.5 kW respectively. LFV (Low Frequency Vibration) chip-breaking technology is available.
The 3-tool simultaneous cutting capability is the GTY's signature feature. The turret, gang tool post, and sub-spindle turret can all cut simultaneously, overlapping operations that would run sequentially on simpler machines. Combined with the 45-tool capacity, this enables some of the most complex parts in the 42 mm class to be completed in a single cycle with minimal idle time.
At 3,740 kg with a footprint suited for compact shop layouts, the BNA-42GTY delivers multi-tasking capability that approaches machines costing significantly more. The Mitsubishi control handles the multi-path synchronization with background editing and 320 m storage capacity. The C-axis, milling interpolation, and rigid tapping features are standard.
The BNA-42GTY is the right choice when maximum tooling density and minimum cycle time are the primary goals. It outpaces every other machine in the BNA-42 lineup for complex parts that need many different tools and multiple simultaneous operations. Medical implant components with 20+ features, aerospace connectors with cross-holes at multiple angles, and electronic housings with complex milled profiles are typical applications.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Up to 45 tool positions across turret, gang, and back ID stations provides class-leading tooling density for complex parts needing many different tools in a single cycle
- 3-tool simultaneous cutting capability overlaps turret, gang, and sub-spindle operations for cycle times that single-turret and even twin-turret machines cannot match
- Dual Y-axes (260 mm on Y1, 70 mm on Y2) provide exceptional off-center machining range for complex milled features on both front and back of the part
- 42 mm bar capacity on both spindles ensures full-diameter backworking without the sub-spindle diameter limitation found on SY and MSY variants
- LFV chip-breaking technology is available for reliable unattended production in stainless steel and titanium
- 9 controlled axes deliver multi-tasking capability approaching machines costing significantly more, all in a compact BNA-42 platform footprint
Limitations
- Most expensive machine in the BNA-42 lineup at $250,000+, approaching the cost of 51 mm and 65 mm platforms that offer larger bar capacity
- 9-axis programming with 3-tool simultaneous cutting is complex and requires experienced multi-path programmers — a scarce skill set
- Gang tool post revolving tool power of 1.0-1.5 kW is modest, limiting the aggressiveness of gang-side milling operations
- Multiple tool stations and axes create more potential collision scenarios, requiring careful simulation before running new programs
- 3,740 kg weight and higher power requirements represent a step up from simpler BNA-42 variants

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New BNA-42GTY machines typically range from $250,000 to $380,000 fully equipped. The 9-axis, 45-tool, 3-tool simultaneous cutting capability commands a significant premium over simpler BNA-42 variants. Used GTY machines are relatively rare on the secondary market due to high demand and tend to hold value well.
02
The turret cuts on one spindle while the gang tool post cuts on the same or different spindle, and the sub-spindle tools work independently. All three groups operate simultaneously without interference. This requires careful process planning to identify which operations can overlap and which must run sequentially due to workpiece dynamics or spindle load considerations.
03
The DHY has two separate turrets (8+6 stations) for dual-turret independence. The GTY has a turret plus gang tools plus back ID tools for up to 45 positions and 3-tool simultaneous cutting. The GTY offers more tools and more simultaneous cutting axes but requires more complex programming. Choose the DHY for simpler dual-turret work; choose the GTY when you need maximum tooling density and minimum cycle time.
04
Expect 3-6 months for experienced CNC programmers to become proficient with the 9-axis, multi-path programming required for the GTY. The 3-tool simultaneous cutting sequences need careful optimization and collision simulation. CAM software with multi-channel simulation is essential. Shops new to multi-path programming should budget for Citizen training and consider starting with simpler jobs before attempting full simultaneous machining.
05
Yes. The GTY runs simpler parts perfectly well, using only the turret and ignoring the gang tools and extra axes. Many shops run a mix of complex high-volume parts that exploit the full capability and simpler parts that use it as a standard dual-spindle turning center. The flexibility to scale complexity up or down is a key advantage.
06
The GTY is a fixed-headstock machine where the workpiece is stationary and the tools move to it. Swiss-type machines use a sliding headstock where the bar moves through a guide bushing. The GTY handles larger diameters (42 mm vs typical 20-32 mm Swiss) and shorter parts without the length-to-diameter ratio limitations of Swiss machines. For short, complex parts at 42 mm, the GTY is often the better choice.
