Price estimate
We do not have a price for the HNK HGH-20 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The HNK HGH-20 is a CNC gear hobbing machine for gears up to Ø2,000 mm (78.7 in), with a Ø1,500 mm (59.1 in) table rated for 15,000 kg (33,069 lb). It opens a series that HNK aims at one job in particular: the yaw and pitch bearings of wind turbines.
Those bearings are large rings with gear teeth on the inside or the outside. HNK's description says that by using an inner gear tooth cutting attachment and an outer gear tooth cutting attachment alternately on the same machine, the cutting of yaw and pitch bearings can be completed at one set-up. The table accordingly lists two module limits: 24M for gear hobbing and 30M for what it labels form milling.
This smallest model has a lighter hob head than the others. Maximum hob diameter is Ø320 mm (12.6 in) and maximum hob length 440 mm (17.3 in); the HGH-40 and the models above it take Ø500 mm (19.7 in) hobs. Tangential travel (Y) is 300 mm (11.8 in). Column travel (X) is 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and vertical travel of the hob head (Z) 1,000 mm (39.4 in).
The external cutter head motor is 52 kW (69.7 hp) and hob speed reaches 250 rpm. The hob head swivels from -45 to +45 degrees on the A-axis for helical teeth, and the table indexes through 0 to 360 degrees as the C-axis. Control: Siemens 840D.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Internal and external teeth cut on one machine with interchangeable attachments
- 52 kW (69.7 hp) external cutter head motor
- Gear hobbing to module 24 and form milling to module 30
- 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) table load
Limitations
- Hob size limited to Ø320 mm (12.6 in) by 440 mm (17.3 in)
- Tangential travel of 300 mm (11.8 in), against 450 mm (17.7 in) on the HGH-40
- Hob speed of 250 rpm at most

Frequently Asked Questions
01
According to HNK, yes: an inner gear tooth cutting attachment and an outer gear tooth cutting attachment are used alternately on the same machine. The specification table gives the motor only for the external cutter head, 52 kW (69.7 hp), so ask for the internal attachment's data.
02
Maximum gear diameter is Ø2,000 mm (78.7 in) on a table of Ø1,500 mm (59.1 in), with a maximum table load capacity of 15,000 kg (33,069 lb). Vertical travel of the hob head is 1,000 mm (39.4 in).
03
Up to 24M with a gear hob and up to 30M in the row HNK labels From Milling, which reads as form milling with an insert cutter. HNK's text mentions both a high speed steel hobber and a hobbing cutter with involute inserts.
04
X is column longitudinal travel, 1,000 mm (39.4 in). Y is the hob head's tangential travel, 300 mm (11.8 in). Z is hob head vertical travel, 1,000 mm (39.4 in). A is the hob head swivel, -45 to +45 degrees, and C is the table index, 0 to 360 degrees.
