Overview
The Hartford PBM-135B is the middle model of the PBM-135 horizontal boring mills. Its table is 1,600 x 1,800 mm (63.0 x 70.9 in) and carries 12,000 kg (26,455 lb), half as much again as the 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) of the PBM-135A, on the same column, spindle and travel options.
Table load is usually the figure that decides between the three PBM-135 versions. A boring mill earns its keep on parts that are heavy for their size: steel weldments, turbine and compressor casings, press frames, large valve bodies. Twelve tonnes covers a wide band of that work without going to the largest table.
Standard travels are 2,500 mm in X, 2,000 mm in Y and 1,500 mm in Z, and each can be extended: X to 3,000 mm or 4,000 mm, Y to 2,500 mm, Z to 2,000 mm. The boring spindle's W axis adds 700 mm (27.6 in). X and Z are driven through planetary reducers, Y directly.
The #50 spindle runs at up to 2,500 rpm through a four-step gearbox. The motor is 22 / 26 kW, or 30 / 37 kW as the option (Cont. / 30 min), and Hartford gives the torque with the larger motor as 6494N/m. The front base carries box guideways 200mm wide, and the guideways come with a 5-year warranty according to the page.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Table load of 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) on a 1,600 x 1,800 mm (63.0 x 70.9 in) table
- Optional travels to 4,000 mm in X, 2,500 mm in Y and 2,000 mm in Z
- 30 / 37 kW motor option with a stated spindle torque of 6494N/m
- 700 mm (27.6 in) W axis carried on two linear guideways
- 5-year warranty on the guideways, as stated by Hartford
Limitations
- Spindle speed tops out at 2,500 rpm, so small-tool work is slow
- Standard Z travel is 1,500 mm; reaching across the 1,800 mm table depth relies on the W axis and table rotation
- Only a 32, 40 or 60 tool magazine is listed
- Rapid traverse rates and table indexing accuracy are not given

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The average table load is 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) on a 1,600 x 1,800 mm (63.0 x 70.9 in) table. Fixtures and angle plates count toward that load.
02
X is 2,500 mm, optionally 3,000 or 4,000 mm. Y is 2,000 mm, optionally 2,500 mm. Z is 1,500 mm, optionally 2,000 mm. W axis travel is 700 mm (27.6 in).
03
Hartford states that the X and Z axes use planetary reducers to raise axial drive torque, and that the Y axis is direct-drive for high speed and less noise. The W axis is supported by two linear guideways.
04
22 / 26 kW as listed and 30 / 37 kW as the option, both continuous / 30 min ratings. The spindle is a #50 gear head at 2,500 rpm with a 4-step speed change.
