Overview
The Haas ST-45Y is a large-bore Y-axis lathe with 44 in (1,118 mm) of turning length, a 27.5 in (699 mm) maximum turning diameter and a 7 in (177.8 mm) spindle bore on an A2-11 nose. A 12-station BMT75 turret carries live tools that run to 4,000 rpm, and Y travel is ± 3 in (± 76 mm).
Set beside the ST-40, the trade is easy to see. The ST-40 has the same 44 in of Z, the same 20 in (508 mm) of X and the same 40 hp (29.8 kW), 1,400 ft-lbf (1,898 N·m) spindle rating, with an A2-8 nose, a 4.62 in (117.3 mm) bore, 2,400 rpm and a 30 in (762 mm) turning diameter. The ST-45Y passes larger stock through the spindle and can mill it, but its spindle stops at 1,400 rpm and its turning diameter is smaller.
The 44 in bed is what suits this machine to shafts and long tube. The MT5 tailstock travels 42 in (1,067 mm) with thrust from 200 lbf (890 N) to 3,000 lbf (13,345 N), so a long part can be held on a centre while it is turned, then milled or cross-drilled without a second setup. Z rapids are 710 ipm (18 m/min), X and Y move at 472 ipm (12 m/min), and the turret indexes in 2 s.
Haas's feature list for this model names full C-axis interpolation, new FEA-optimised castings, an increased wedge stance and improved chip evacuation. A 24-station half-index turret is optional, and so is the Auto Door. WiFi, HaasDrop wireless file transfer, Safe Run and HaasConnect remote monitoring are standard.
The chuck is a separate decision: the table lists an 18 in (457 mm) chuck as an option and a bar capacity of 6.5 in (165 mm) with optional workholding. An XP option takes the spindle to 55 hp (41 kW) and 2,100 ft-lbf (2,847 N·m) at 150 rpm. Haas's starting price is US$253,995.
