Overview
The Haas ST-45Y adds Y-axis milling and live tooling to the ST-45 large-bore platform. With a 178 mm (7.0 in) spindle bore, A2-11 spindle nose, 457 mm (18 in) chuck, and BMT75 live tooling, the ST-45Y handles large-bore tubular work with the added capability to mill cross-holes, flats, and off-center features without a second setup.
The 29.8 kW (40 hp) spindle drives through a 2-speed gearbox, producing 1,898 Nm (1,400 ft-lb) of torque at 150 RPM. Max spindle speed is 1,400 RPM. An optional XP high-performance spindle bumps output to 41.0 kW (55 hp) and 2,847 Nm (2,100 ft-lb). The max cutting envelope is 762 mm (30 in) diameter by 1,118 mm (44 in) length.
The BMT75 turret provides 12 stations of live tooling at 4,000 RPM with 5.6 kW (7.5 hp). Y-axis travel of 102 mm (4.0 in) total enables cross-drilling, milling flats, hexes, and bolt patterns on large-bore components. C-axis positioning resolves to 0.01 degrees for accurate angular feature placement.
The 7-inch bore is the defining feature. Where the ST-40Y handles general large-frame work with its 4.62-inch bore, the ST-45Y is purpose-built for tubular and hollow components that must pass through the spindle. Oil and gas pipe fittings, valve bodies, large-bore couplings, and hollow shafts that need both turning and milling are the sweet spot.
At $235,000-$300,000 configured, the ST-45Y fills the gap between the ST-40Y and the massive ST-55 platform. It competes with the Doosan Puma 4100LMB and Mazak QT-500MY in shops that need large-bore Y-axis capability. Specs derived from Haas Automation published ST-45 and ST-40Y data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 7.0-inch spindle bore with Y-axis milling handles large-bore tubular work with cross-holes and milled features in one setup
- BMT75 turret with 7.5 hp live tooling provides aggressive milling capability on large-bore workpieces
- 40 hp spindle with 1,400 ft-lb of torque through a 2-speed gearbox for heavy roughing on pipe and casing
- 18-inch chuck on A2-11 nose securely clamps large-bore tubular components for turning and milling
- Optional XP spindle to 55 hp and 2,100 ft-lb for the most demanding oil and gas material removal
- At $235-300K, offers large-bore Y-axis capability at a fraction of specialty oil-country lathe pricing
Limitations
- 1,400 RPM max spindle speed limits surface speed on smaller-diameter work and aluminum finishing
- 18-inch chuck and large spindle assembly add rotational inertia, increasing accel/decel times
- Machine weight of 11,340 kg requires heavy-duty foundation and professional rigging
- No sub-spindle option on the base ST-45Y — the ST-45SY adds sub-spindle capability at additional cost

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $235,000 with BMT75 turret and Y-axis. Configured with tailstock, XP spindle, chip conveyor, and high-pressure coolant, expect $270,000-$300,000. The Y-axis and BMT75 add approximately $50,000 over the base ST-45.
02
The ST-45Y has a 178 mm (7.0 in) spindle bore with A2-11 nose and 18-inch chuck, while the ST-40Y has 117.3 mm (4.62 in) bore with A2-8 and 15-inch chuck. The ST-45Y runs 1,400 RPM max versus 2,400 RPM. Choose the ST-45Y for large-bore tubular work; choose the ST-40Y for general large-frame mill-turn with higher RPM.
03
Yes. The C-axis and live tooling make the ST-45Y well-suited for threading operations on pipe and casing. The 7-inch bore passes pipe stock through the spindle for efficient processing, and the NGC control supports all standard threading cycles.
04
For shops primarily machining tough materials or taking heavy roughing passes on large-diameter parts, the XP upgrade to 55 hp and 2,100 ft-lb of torque is strongly recommended. The additional power makes a significant difference on interrupted cuts and heavy material removal in oil and gas applications.
