Overview
The Haas ST-25LY is a long-bed turn-mill lathe: 30 hp (22.4 kW) and a 10 in (254 mm) chuck at the headstock, 42.5 in (1,080 mm) of Z travel, ± 2 in (± 51 mm) of Y, and BMT65 live tools that run to 4,000 rpm.
Two speeds decide how it gets used. The main spindle peaks at 3,400 rpm and makes its 300 ft-lbf (407 N·m) at 500 rpm, a low-speed, high-torque characteristic suited to roughing 3 in (76 mm) bar and larger chucked stock. The live tools turn faster than the spindle does, yet 4,000 rpm is still slow for small end mills and drills. Plan milled features around cutter diameters that work at that speed, and allow cycle time for small cross holes.
Next to the ST-20LY the travels, the Y stroke, the 11.75 in (298 mm) turning diameter and even the 12,360 lb (5,606 kg) weight are the same. The ST-20LY has 20 hp (14.9 kW), 150 ft-lbf (203 N·m), 2.5 in (64 mm) of bar capacity and a 4,000 rpm spindle. Choose between the two on material and bar size, not on envelope.
For milling, the C axis both positions and interpolates. It positions to 0.01°, turns at up to 60 rpm on a 5 hp (3.7 kW) rating, and clamps with 250 ft-lbf (339 N·m) from a brake 13.9 in (353 mm) in diameter. Y thrust is 2,300 lbf (10,231 N), less than half the 5,100 lbf (22,686 N) of Z, and X and Y rapid at 472 ipm (12 m/min) where Z moves at 945 ipm (24 m/min).
No sub-spindle appears in the table. Supply is 70 A at 220 VAC three-phase or 35 A at 440 VAC, and Haas lists a starting price of US$171,995.
