Overview

The Haas ST-25LY is the long-bed, Y-axis variant of the ST-25 platform, combining 30 hp of spindle power, 76 mm (3 in) bar capacity, and a 12-station BMT-65 turret with 6,000 RPM live tooling on an 813 mm (32 in) Z-axis bed. It is the smallest long-bed Haas lathe with 30 hp and Y-axis capability.

The A2-6 spindle delivers 22.4 kW (30 hp) and 407 Nm (300 ft-lb) of torque at 500 RPM, topping out at 3,400 RPM. Y-axis travel is +/-50.8 mm (+/-2.0 in), and the BMT-65 turret runs live tooling at 6,000 RPM with 3.7 kW (5 hp). The C-axis holds +/-0.01 degrees for precision milling, drilling, and tapping.

Max cutting diameter is approximately 330 mm (13 in) and max cutting length is 813 mm (32 in). Axis travels are 213 mm (8.4 in) in X, +/-50.8 mm in Y, and 813 mm in Z. Rapids run at 12 m/min (472 ipm) on X and Y, and 24 m/min (945 ipm) on Z.

The ST-25LY fills a gap between the ST-20LY and the ST-30LY. It delivers the ST-30LY's 30 hp and 3-inch bore in the compact ST-20/25 frame with the same 32-inch Z-travel as the ST-20LY. Shops that need more power and bore than the ST-20LY but don't require the ST-30LY's larger cutting envelope get the best of both worlds.

At roughly $115,000-$145,000 configured, the ST-25LY is a serious long-bed mill-turn machine. It handles cross-drilling, flat milling, keyway cutting, and tapping on longer shafts and components without requiring a second setup on a VMC — all backed by the NGC control and HFO service network.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 30 hp spindle with 300 ft-lb torque and Y-axis on a long bed — 50% more power than the ST-20LY in the same frame
  • 3-inch bar capacity with BMT-65 live tooling covers larger bar stock for done-in-one long-part production
  • 6,000 RPM live tooling at 5 hp enables aggressive milling, cross-drilling, and tapping on longer workpieces
  • 813 mm (32 in) Z-axis travel handles long shafts with cross-features that won't fit the standard ST-25Y bed
  • 10-inch chuck on A2-6 nose provides more jaw reach than the ST-20LY's 8.3-inch chuck
  • Same compact frame as the ST-20LY with significantly more cutting power and bore capacity

Limitations

  • 3,400 RPM max spindle speed limits small-diameter surface speeds compared to the ST-20LY's 4,000 RPM
  • Same 13-inch max cutting diameter as the ST-20LY — only power and bore increase, not cutting reach
  • 3.7 kW (5 hp) live tooling limits aggressive milling operations on tougher materials
  • No sub-spindle option limits back-working — parts needing back-end features still require a second setup

Best For

Long shaft production with cross-features requiring 30 hp turning power and Y-axis milling in 3-inch bar Oil and gas fitting manufacturers machining longer components with cross-holes and threaded ports Hydraulic cylinder and manifold shops running larger bar stock on longer parts with milling requirements Shops stepping up from the ST-20LY that need more torque and 3-inch bore on a long bed Production facilities running done-in-one parts in the 572-813 mm length range with cross-drilling and tapping

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas ST-25LY cost?

Base price starts around $115,000. Adding tailstock, chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant, and common options pushes configured price to $130,000-$145,000. The long-bed Y-axis premium over the standard ST-25 is approximately $50,000-$55,000.

02 How does the ST-25LY compare to the ST-20LY?

The ST-25LY upgrades to 30 hp (vs 20 hp), 300 ft-lb torque (vs 150 ft-lb), 3-inch bore (vs 2.5-inch), and a 10-inch chuck (vs 8.3-inch). Both share the same 32-inch Z-travel and BMT-65 live tooling. The ST-25LY costs $25,000-$30,000 more but delivers 50% more power for heavier cuts in steel and stainless.

03 What is the difference between the ST-25Y and ST-25LY?

The ST-25LY extends the Z-axis from 572 mm (22.5 in) to 813 mm (32 in). The spindle, Y-axis, turret, and live tooling are identical. Choose the LY when your parts with cross-features regularly exceed 22.5 inches in turning length.

04 Should I buy the ST-25LY or the ST-30LY?

The ST-30LY has a larger cutting envelope at 406 x 1,016 mm (16 x 40 in) versus the ST-25LY's 330 x 813 mm (13 x 32 in), plus a larger swing and heavier casting. Both share the same 30 hp spindle and BMT-65 live tooling. Choose the ST-25LY for compact footprint. Choose the ST-30LY when you need larger parts or more rigidity.
