Overview

The Goodway GTW-1500Y combines two tooling systems that are normally found on different machines: a 12-station live tooling turret for the main spindle and an 8-station gang type tooling system for the sub-spindle. Goodway describes it as joining the capabilities of turret type and SWISS type turning centers, and names the medical and automobile industries as its targets.

The main spindle has a built-in motor rated 11 kW (14.8 hp) continuous, 15 kW (20.1 hp) for 30 min. and 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) at 25% duty, with a 5,000 rpm top speed. Three work-holding versions are listed side by side: a CL42 collet with Ø42 mm (1.7 in) bar capacity, a CL52 collet with Ø51 mm (2.0 in), or a 6 in big-bore chuck with Ø51 mm.

On the upper side, the turret moves 180 mm (7.1 in) in X1, 268 mm (10.6 in) in Z1 and ±35 mm (±1.4 in) in Y1. Maximum turning length is 210 mm (8.3 in).

The rear side is where the design is unusual. The sub-spindle itself travels 310 mm (12.2 in) in X2 and 550 mm (21.7 in) in Z2, and the gang tool post has 250 mm (9.8 in) of Y2 travel on box ways. Each of the 8 gang positions can hold a live tool, at up to 6,000 rpm. Tool changes on the back of the part are therefore short slides, not turret indexes. The sub-spindle motor is smaller, 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) continuous and 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) for 15 min., at 6,000 rpm. Both Y axes are standard on this model.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Upper 12-station live tooling turret plus an 8-station rear gang type tooling system
  • Twin Y-axis control as standard: Y1 of ±35 mm (±1.4 in) and Y2 of 250 mm (9.8 in)
  • Built-in spindle motors on main and sub-spindle with forced external cooling
  • Main spindle rated 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) at 25% duty and 11 kW (14.8 hp) continuous
  • Rear gang live tools run at up to 6,000 rpm

Limitations

  • Bar capacity tops out at Ø51 mm (2.0 in)
  • Turning length is 210 mm (8.3 in)
  • The sub-spindle is rated 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) continuous
  • The table gives no speed for the turret's live tools; the feature list states 4,000 rpm
06

Best For

Complex small parts with heavy back-end content, such as medical components Bar work up to Ø51 mm (2.0 in) needing milling on both ends Jobs where rear-side tool change time dominates the cycle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the GTW-1500Y different from a normal twin-spindle lathe?

Its rear tooling. The sub-spindle works against an 8-station gang type tooling system on a Y2-axis with 250 mm (9.8 in) of travel, and the sub-spindle has its own X2-axis of 310 mm (12.2 in). Goodway says this integrates turret type and SWISS type machining in one machine.

02 What bar sizes does the GTW-1500Y accept?

Ø42 mm (1.7 in) with the CL42 collet, or Ø51 mm (2.0 in) with either the CL52 collet or the 6 in big-bore chuck. The sub-spindle is listed with a CL42 collet, a CL52 collet or a 5 in chuck to match.

03 How powerful are the spindles of the GTW-1500Y?

The main spindle is rated 11 kW (14.8 hp) continuous, 15 kW (20.1 hp) for 30 min. and 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) at 25% duty, at 5,000 rpm. The sub-spindle is rated 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) continuous and 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) for 15 min., at 6,000 rpm.

04 Is the Y-axis standard on the GTW-1500Y?

Yes. Goodway lists twin Y-axis control as a standard feature. Y1 on the turret travels ±35 mm (±1.4 in), and the maker notes it is set at a 30° included angle to X1. Y2 on the rear gang tool post travels 250 mm (9.8 in), with a rapid feed rate of 24 m/min.
