Overview

The Goodway GMT-4000L3 is the large B-axis multi-tasking machine in the range, sized for parts up to Ø820 mm (32.3 in) and 3,055 mm (120.3 in) long. Chucks run from 15 in to 24 in. It is a different class from the GMT-2000: an HSK-T100 or Capto C8 milling spindle, a geared turning spindle and 900 mm (35.4 in) of X travel.

Heavy milling is the point of the larger taper. The tool spindle is rated 34 kW (45.6 hp) continuous and 44 kW (59.0 hp) at 40% duty, runs to 10,000 rpm, and Goodway quotes 188 Nm of continuous torque at 1,725 rpm. Y travel is 500 mm (19.7 in), ±250 mm about center, enough to mill wide flats and deep pockets on a large shaft without repositioning. The B-axis covers 240°, and Goodway offers it with either a direct drive motor or a roller cam drive.

On the turning side the spindle reaches 3,320 rpm with a motor rated 28.3 kW (38.0 hp) continuous and 32.3 kW (43.3 hp) at 40%. Through its gearbox Goodway states 3,345 Nm of torque at low speed. The C-axis is a separate Cf type with a disc brake, quoted at 2,100 Nm continuous.

Z travel is 3,125 mm (123.0 in). An optional servo-driven self-centering steady rest has 2,280 mm (89.8 in) of travel and is positioned by the NC program. Goodway lists turning, milling, drilling, gear hobbing, power skiving and automatic workpiece measuring among the processes for the series. The S variation adds a second spindle of the same specification.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • HSK-T100 or Capto C8 milling spindle rated 34 kW (45.6 hp) continuous, 10,000 rpm
  • Y-axis travel of 500 mm (19.7 in) and X-axis travel of 900 mm (35.4 in)
  • Geared turning spindle with 3,345 Nm at low speed, per Goodway
  • Capacity of Ø820 mm (32.3 in) by 3,055 mm (120.3 in)
  • Programmable steady rest with 2,280 mm (89.8 in) of travel as an option

Limitations

  • Only the L3 bed length appears in Goodway's table
  • The standard magazine holds 40 tools; 80 and 120 are options
  • No lower turret is listed, so one tool cuts at a time
  • The second spindle is the S variation, not part of the base machine

Best For

Large shafts, rolls and landing-gear type parts needing heavy 5-axis milling Gear hobbing and power skiving on turned blanks in one setup Replacing several machines on low-volume, high-value parts
