Overview

S stands for spindle 2. The Goodway GMT-2000S is the GMT-2000 mill-turn with a second turning spindle where the base machine has a tailstock, so a part can be machined on the front, transferred, and machined on the back without an operator turning it round.

Goodway says spindle 2 adopts the same specification design as spindle 1, giving the same cutting ability on both sides of the workpiece. The table lists it in three versions: an 8 in chuck at 4,500 rpm or a 10 in chuck at 3,800 rpm in two of them. Spindle 1 is offered with 8 in, 10 in or 12 in chucks at 4,500, 3,800 and 3,200 rpm. So a machine ordered with the 12 in main spindle is paired with a 10 in second spindle.

Above the two spindles runs the B-axis milling head. It reaches 12,000 rpm, takes HSK-T63 or Capto C6 tooling and is rated 20.8 kW (27.9 hp) at S6-40%. Travels are 615 mm (24.2 in) in X1, ±150 mm (±5.9 in) in Y1 and 1,090 mm (42.9 in), 1,590 mm (62.6 in) or 2,590 mm (102.0 in) in Z1, according to bed length.

With one tool in the cut at a time, cycle time on this version depends on the tool changer. The 40-tool magazine, expandable to 80 or 120, feeds an arm-type changer. A parts catcher or parts conveyor is optional for unloading finished pieces from spindle 2. Where volume justifies a second cutting tool working at the same moment, the GMT-2000ST adds a lower turret.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Second spindle to the same specification design as the first, for complete machining of both ends
  • 12,000 rpm B-axis milling spindle with HSK-T63 or Capto C6 taper
  • 9 axes control and 5 axes simultaneous machining across the series, per Goodway
  • Three bed lengths with Z1 travel up to 2,590 mm (102.0 in)

Limitations

  • No tailstock: the table shows a dash where the GMT-2000 lists an MT#5 live center
  • Only one tool cuts at a time; the lower turret belongs to the GMT-2000ST
  • Spindle 2 is limited to a 10 in chuck even when spindle 1 has 12 in
  • Parts catcher and parts conveyor are options
06

Best For

Complex parts finished on both ends in one cycle Aerospace and hydraulic components needing 5-axis milling plus turning Small and medium batches where setup reduction matters most

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the S in GMT-2000S mean?

Spindle 2. Goodway's variation list shows S as the version with a second spindle. It takes the place of the tailstock of the base GMT-2000, and Goodway states it adopts the same specification design as spindle 1.

02 What are the spindle sizes on the GMT-2000S?

Spindle 1 comes with an 8 in, 10 in or 12 in chuck at 4,500 rpm, 3,800 rpm or 3,200 rpm. Spindle 2 is listed with an 8 in chuck at 4,500 rpm or a 10 in chuck at 3,800 rpm; the 10 in version is paired with both the 10 in and the 12 in main spindle.

03 How long a part can the GMT-2000S take?

Maximum turning length is 1,020 mm (40.2 in), 1,520 mm (59.8 in) on the L1 bed or 2,520 mm (99.2 in) on the L2 bed. Maximum turning diameter with the milling spindle is Ø660 mm (26.0 in).

04 Is there automation for the GMT-2000S?

Goodway lists an optional parts catcher or parts conveyor system for unloading, and mentions its G.LINC smart operating system and various automation systems as options for the series.
