Overview

The Goodway GMT-2000 is a B-axis multi-tasking machine: a turning spindle, a 12,000 rpm milling spindle that swivels through 240°, and an automatic tool changer. In its base form, described here, it has one turning spindle and a tailstock. The GMT-2000S replaces the tailstock with a second spindle and the GMT-2000ST adds a lower turret as well.

The milling spindle is a built-in motor unit rated 20.8 kW (27.9 hp) at S6-40%, with an HSK-T63 or Capto C6 interface. It travels 615 mm (24.2 in) in X1 and ±150 mm (±5.9 in) in Y1, and its B-axis range is printed as +210° to -30°. Goodway fits a 0.001° angle encoder on the B-axis as standard and describes the machine as capable of 5 axes simultaneous machining.

Turning capacity is Ø660 mm (26.0 in), equal to the swing, because the tool comes down from above instead of from a turret beside the part. Three lengths are offered: 1,020 mm (40.2 in), 1,520 mm (59.8 in) as L1 and 2,520 mm (99.2 in) as L2. The turning spindle is ordered in one of three sizes, an 8 in chuck at 4,500 rpm, 10 in at 3,800 rpm or 12 in at 3,200 rpm, and Goodway quotes 1,450 Nm of maximum torque for its built-in motor.

Tools live in a 40-position chain magazine with an arm-type changer; 80 and 120-position magazines are optional. The tailstock on this version is a programmable servo type with an MT#5 live center, which makes the base model the one to choose for shaft work.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 12,000 rpm built-in milling spindle rated 20.8 kW (27.9 hp) at S6-40%
  • B-axis range of 240° with a 0.001° encoder as standard
  • Y1 travel of ±150 mm (±5.9 in) and X1 travel of 615 mm (24.2 in)
  • Servo tailstock with MT#5 live center for long parts
  • Turning length up to 2,520 mm (99.2 in) on the L2 bed

Limitations

  • The base model has no second spindle, so the back of a part needs another setup
  • No lower turret, so all cutting is done by the single milling spindle
  • The 80 and 120-tool magazines are options over the standard 40
  • The thermal compensation system is optional

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the GMT-2000, GMT-2000S and GMT-2000ST?

The GMT-2000 has one turning spindle and a tailstock with an MT#5 live center. The GMT-2000S has a second spindle in place of the tailstock. The GMT-2000ST has the second spindle plus a 9-station lower turret.

02 What is the milling spindle of the GMT-2000 capable of?

It runs to 12,000 rpm on a built-in motor rated 20.8 kW (27.9 hp) at S6-40%, with an HSK-T63 or Capto C6 taper. It moves 615 mm (24.2 in) in X1 and ±150 mm (±5.9 in) in Y1, and swivels through 240° on the B-axis.

03 Which chuck sizes are available on the GMT-2000?

Three spindle versions, labelled A, B and C: an 8 in chuck at 4,500 rpm, a 10 in chuck at 3,800 rpm, or a 12 in chuck at 3,200 rpm. Goodway states that the built-in spindle delivers a maximum torque of 1,450 Nm.

04 How many tools does the GMT-2000 hold?

The standard chain-type magazine holds 40 tools, and 80 or 120-tool magazines are optional. Goodway gives the maximum tool size as Ø130 mm with adjacent pockets empty and 450 mm in length.
