Overview

The GF Machining Solutions AgieCharmilles CUT 1000 is a precision micro wire EDM designed for the most demanding small-part and micro-feature applications. With X/Y/Z travels of just 220 x 160 x 100 mm and maximum workpiece dimensions of 300 x 200 x 80 mm, the CUT 1000 is purpose-built for micro-precision cutting where accuracy and surface finish quality matter far more than workpiece size.

The CUT 1000 achieves surface finishes down to Ra 0.05 micrometers — the finest in GF's wire EDM portfolio and among the finest available from any wire EDM manufacturer. This mirror-class finish capability eliminates polishing steps on precision micro-components where manual finishing would compromise dimensional accuracy or introduce surface damage.

Wire diameter support ranges from 0.07 to 0.20 mm standard, with optional ultra-fine capability down to 0.02 mm. At 0.02 mm wire diameter, internal corner radii approach 0.01 mm — enabling feature sizes in the single-digit micron range for the most advanced micro-machining applications. The dual-circuit wire system supports 2 x 8 kg wire spools for extended running on fine wire.

U/V travel of +/-40 mm provides taper capability of +/-3 degrees over 80 mm height — modest compared to production wire EDMs, reflecting the CUT 1000's focus on straight and near-straight precision profiles rather than aggressive taper work. Maximum workpiece weight of 35 kg matches the micro-component target application. The CUT 1000 uses deionized water as its dielectric medium.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ra 0.05 micrometers surface finish is the finest in GF's wire EDM lineup — mirror-class quality
  • Ultra-fine wire capability down to 0.02 mm enables micro-features with single-digit micron corner radii
  • Purpose-built for micro-precision cutting with outstanding accuracy on small components
  • Dual-circuit 2 x 8 kg wire system supports extended fine-wire running
  • Eliminates hand polishing on precision micro-components where manual finishing would compromise accuracy
  • Compact design optimized for clean-room or controlled-environment installation

Limitations

  • Extremely small work envelope (220 x 160 x 100 mm) limits applications to micro and small parts only
  • 35 kg maximum workpiece weight excludes even modest die blocks
  • +/-3 deg taper is minimal — not suitable for applications requiring significant angular features
  • At $250K-$400K, significant investment for the specialized micro-cutting capability

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the finest wire the CUT 1000 can run?

With the optional ultra-fine wire package, the CUT 1000 supports wire diameters down to 0.02 mm (20 micrometers). This is among the finest wire EDM capability commercially available, enabling internal corner radii approaching 0.01 mm. Standard wire range is 0.07-0.20 mm.

02 How does the CUT 1000 compare to the CUT X 350 for precision work?

The CUT 1000 achieves finer surface finish (Ra 0.05 vs 0.08 micrometers) and supports finer wire (0.02 vs 0.07 mm minimum) but has a much smaller work envelope (220x160x100 vs 350x250x256 mm). The CUT 1000 is a dedicated micro-precision machine, while the CUT X 350 is a precision production machine with AI optimization.

03 What industries use the CUT 1000?

Watchmaking (escapement parts, wheels, pinions), medical devices (micro-implant tooling, stent tooling), electronics (micro-connector punches, semiconductor tooling), aerospace (micro-turbine components, sensor housings), and precision instrumentation (gauge masters, micro-nozzles).

04 Why is the taper angle limited to +/-3 degrees?

The CUT 1000 is designed for micro-precision straight and near-straight profile cutting. Micro-components rarely require aggressive taper angles, so the U/V travel is optimized for fine positional accuracy rather than wide angular range. For taper-intensive applications, the CUT S series is more appropriate.
