Overview

The Emco Hyperturn 65 Powermill G2 combines three cutting systems in one work area: a main and counter spindle for turning, a milling spindle on a B and Y axis above them, and a lower tool turret with its own milling drive. Bar capacity is 65 (102) mm and maximum turning diameter 500 mm (19.7 in).

The milling spindle is what makes it a multi-tasking machine. It is rated 37 (30) kW and 110 (58) Nm and draws its tools from a chain magazine with 40, 80 or 120 slots. The upper slide carrying it travels 530 mm in X and Y1 240 mm, far more than any turret Y axis, so prismatic features can be machined on a turned blank much as they would be on a machining centre. Emco notes that both tool systems can be used on both spindles.

Below, the turret keeps turning tools and short drilling cycles out of the tool-change queue. Its driven positions are rated 0-12000 rpm, 11.7 (11.7) kW and 28 (25) Nm, on BMT55P or BMT45P.

The spindles deserve a careful read. Main spindle power is 29 (38) kW and torque 250 (800) Nm; the counter spindle has 29 (33) kW and 250 (420) Nm. The bracketed values are the big-bore, high-torque variants and run to the bracketed speed in 0-5000 (4000) rpm. All spindles are liquid-cooled. With 1,500 mm (59.1 in) between the spindles and Z travels of Z1/Z2 1215/1205 mm, the machine handles long parts for its diameter. It weighs approx. 16500 kg.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Milling spindle with B and Y axis, rated 37 (30) kW and 110 (58) Nm
  • 40-, 80- or 120-slot chain-type tool magazine
  • Additional lower turret with milling drive: 11.7 (11.7) kW, 0-12000 rpm
  • Main spindle torque of 250 (800) Nm depending on variant
  • Both tool systems can be used on both spindles
  • All spindles liquid-cooled

Limitations

  • The high-torque spindle variants are limited to the bracketed speed in 0-5000 (4000) rpm
  • One lower turret only; the Hyperturn 65 Powermill High Performance carries two
  • Needs 5,970 x 2,430 x 2,480 mm (235.0 x 95.7 x 97.6 in) of floor and weighs approx. 16500 kg
  • Emco's table gives the milling spindle speed in a format that could not be read cleanly, so confirm it with the quotation

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the Powermill part of the Hyperturn 65 Powermill G2?

A separate milling spindle on a B and Y axis, fed from a chain-type tool magazine with 40, 80 or 120 slots. It is rated 37 (30) kW and 110 (58) Nm, and it works alongside a lower tool turret with its own milling drive.

02 What spindle options are there?

The main spindle is listed with 29 (38) kW, 250 (800) Nm and 0-5000 (4000) rpm; the counter spindle with 29 (33) kW and 250 (420) Nm. The first value is the standard spindle and the bracketed one the larger variant, which goes with the bracketed bar size in 65 (102) mm.

03 How long a part can it machine?

The distance between the spindles is 1,500 mm (59.1 in) and the Z travels are Z1/Z2 1215/1205 mm. Maximum turning diameter and swing over the bed are both 500 mm (19.7 in).

04 How does it differ from the Hyperturn 65 Powermill High Performance?

The Hyperturn 65 Powermill High Performance has two lower turrets, listed as 2x12 (2x16), each on its own X/Y/Z axes, where the G2 has one. The G2 offers the larger magazine choice of 40, 80 or 120 slots.
