Overview
The EMAG SN 320 is the largest machine in EMAG’s SN Series of CNC out-of-round grinding platforms, built for production grinding of the largest camshafts, eccentric shafts, and non-circular profile components in industrial, marine, and power generation applications. With capacity for workpieces up to 640 mm in diameter and 2,000 mm in length, the SN 320 handles workpieces that no other machine in the SN family can accommodate — large marine diesel camshafts, power generation engine cams, and heavy industrial eccentric components.
The machine provides 500 mm of X-axis travel and 2,700 mm of Z-axis travel, with hydrostatic guideways in all linear axes and a hydrostatic leadscrew drive in the infeed axis. This full-hydrostatic architecture is the same proven technology used throughout the SN Series, scaled up to maintain the frictionless axis motion and zero reversal error needed for accurate out-of-round profile grinding on large, heavy workpieces that amplify any vibration or positioning error.
The 640 mm maximum workpiece diameter — nearly double the SN 310’s 360 mm capacity — accommodates the large-diameter cams and eccentric components found in low-speed marine diesel engines, natural gas compressors, and heavy-duty industrial machinery. The 2,000 mm workpiece length handles the longest camshafts in production, including large V-configuration marine engines and multi-cylinder locomotive diesels.
The modular design supports various workhead, tailstock, and grinding wheel configurations customized to the specific application. Multiple grinding wheels can be positioned along the 2,700 mm Z-axis for simultaneous multi-lobe grinding operations. Both corundum and CBN wheels are supported, though the choice depends heavily on the specific application.
New EMAG SN 320 machines typically price between $900,000 and $1,500,000 depending on configuration, spindle count, and automation level.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 640 mm diameter and 2,000 mm length capacity handles the largest camshafts in production including marine diesel, power generation, and heavy industrial engines
- 2,700 mm Z-axis travel enables multi-wheel grinding of widely-spaced cam lobes on long camshafts without Z-axis capacity limitations
- Full hydrostatic guideway system across all axes maintains out-of-round profile accuracy on large, heavy workpieces that amplify any axis motion errors
- 500 mm X-axis travel accommodates the largest grinding wheel diameters for maximum stock removal on big workpieces
- Modular design with customizable configurations enables optimization for specific large-engine camshaft applications
- Proven SN Series architecture scaled up so operators and maintenance staff familiar with smaller SN machines can transfer their knowledge
Limitations
- Premium pricing of $900K-$1.5M makes the SN 320 a major capital investment justified only for dedicated large-camshaft production or high-value industrial applications
- Large machine footprint and heavy weight require substantial foundation preparation and floor space allocation
- Full hydrostatic system across all axes demands significant hydraulic infrastructure including power unit, filtration, cooling, and ongoing oil condition monitoring
- Very specialized niche as the number of applications requiring 640 mm diameter and 2,000 mm length out-of-round grinding is limited

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The SN 320 provides significantly larger capacity: 640 mm diameter vs. 360 mm, 2,000 mm length vs. 1,000 mm, and 2,700 mm Z-axis travel vs. 1,700 mm. The SN 310 covers large automotive and medium industrial camshafts; the SN 320 handles the largest marine, power generation, and locomotive engine camshafts.
02
The SN 320 serves industries with the largest engine camshafts: marine propulsion (large two-stroke and four-stroke diesel engines), power generation (generator set engines), railroad (locomotive diesel engines), and industrial (large mining and construction equipment engines).
03
Yes. Like all SN Series machines, the SN 320 supports both out-of-round (cam lobe) grinding and conventional cylindrical (journal) grinding. Multiple grinding wheels can be configured for different operations enabling complete camshaft processing in a single setup.
04
Due to its customized nature and scale, SN 320 lead times typically run 9-15 months from order to delivery. Each machine is configured to specific application requirements, and the large castings and hydrostatic components require extended procurement and assembly times.
