Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Republic Lagun UTC-1860 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Republic Lagun UTC-1860 is the largest of the tri-way Universal Turning Centers: Ø 18.11 in (460 mm) of swing, 55.11 in (1,400 mm) between centers and a Ø 2.56 in (65 mm) spindle bore. Lagun Engineering describes it as having constant surface speed, a conversational control system and manual hand wheel control.
Much of the maker's description is about how the machine is built. The base is a one-piece Meehanite casting with no pedestals or sheet metal. The bed uses three V ways, induction hardened to HS 70-75 and ground, and the dovetail carriage and cross slide ways are coated with Turcite-b and hand-scraped. Headstock gears are hardened and ground, four matched vee belts drive the spindle, and a separate pump and reservoir feed pressurized oil to the headstock gears and bearings. The electrical cabinet is sealed and fan cooled, with the transformer and resistor housed separately below it.
In capacity terms the long bed gives a working length of 49.21 in (1,250 mm) with the manual 4 way tool post and 43.3 in (1,100 mm) with the optional hydraulic P8 turret. Working diameter is 10.2 in (260 mm) and 9.84 in (250 mm) in the same order. X travel is 9.05 in (230 mm), Z travel 53.15 in (1,350 mm).
Spindle speeds are listed as 270-830 rpm in the low range and 831-2,500 rpm in the high, with an A2-6 nose. A hydraulic oil pump of 1 HP (0.75 kW) or 2 HP (1.5 kW) is optional. The machine weighs 5,720 lb (2,600 kg) net and 6,820 lb (3,100 kg) gross. The maker's table does not give a clean main motor figure for this model, so that is a question for the quotation.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- One-piece Meehanite base with a front-removal chip pan, per the maker
- Bed ways induction hardened to HS 70-75 and precision ground
- 53.15 in (1,350 mm) of Z travel with a Ø 2.56 in (65 mm) spindle bore
- Sealed, fan-cooled electrical cabinet with transformer and resistor housed separately
- Slide-along manual console with handwheels, spindle and coolant controls and E-stop
Limitations
- Listed speed ranges start at 270 rpm and end at 2,500 rpm
- Main motor rating is not given cleanly in the maker's table
- Hydraulic P8 turret and hydraulic pump are options, not standard equipment
- At 5,720 lb (2,600 kg) net it is the heaviest of the tri-way UTC models

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Republic Lagun describes a one-piece Meehanite base, an extra wide bed stress relieved by annealing with three V ways induction hardened to HS 70-75, and dovetail carriage and cross slide ways coated with Turcite-b and hand-scraped. The headstock has hardened and ground gears and its own pressurized lubrication system.
02
X travel is 9.05 in (230 mm) and Z travel is 53.15 in (1,350 mm). Distance between centers is 55.11 in (1,400 mm). Rapid traverse is 295 ipm (7.5 m/min) in X and 394 ipm (10 m/min) in Z.
03
Yes. The description lists manual hand wheel control alongside the conversational control system. The feature list describes a manual operation control console that slides the full length of the center distance and houses the handwheels, spindle and coolant controls, feed rate dials and E-stop.
04
The UTC-2260 is a larger machine with a Ø 22 in (550 mm) swing, 11.8 in (300 mm) of X travel and a 35-3,500 rpm spindle driven by an AC 12 HP (9 kW) motor. The UTC-1860 has a Ø 18.11 in (460 mm) swing and 9.05 in (230 mm) of X travel, and its Z travel of 53.15 in (1,350 mm) is slightly longer than the 50.4 in (1,280 mm) of the UTC-2260.
