Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Dainichi DL120 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Dainichi DL120 is a 2-axis (X, Z) CNC lathe for large shaft and roll work: 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of swing over the bed, 800 mm (31.5 in) over the carriage, and a distance between centres that Dainichi lists from 1,500 to 10,000 mm (59.1-393.7 in). It carries up to 7,500 kg (16,535 lb) between centres.
Those figures describe the part it is meant for. Anything long enough to pass over the carriage is limited to 800 mm (31.5 in), so the full 1,200 mm (47.2 in) swing applies only to flanges, discs and short sections turned close to the chuck. The standard chuck is a 4-jaw of 600 mm (23.6 in), half the swing over the bed, which leaves radial room for the jaws to reach out on bigger diameters.
The spindle runs from 10 to 630 min-1 in 2 gear ranges. Power is listed as 26 / 22 kW (34.9 / 29.5 hp), with 37 / 30 kW (49.6 / 40.2 hp) as the optional motor. A 630 min-1 ceiling is ample at these diameters, where surface speed builds quickly, but it rules the machine out for small-diameter finishing at high cutting speeds. The spindle bore is 85 mm (3.3 in) as standard, and the option list runs 125 / 175 / 254 / 320 / 425 mm (4.9 / 6.9 / 10.0 / 12.6 / 16.7 in), so the headstock can be specified for pipe and other hollow work that feeds through the spindle.
In Dainichi's range the DL120 sits between the DL95, which runs to 900 min-1 on 18.5 / 15 kW (24.8 / 20.1 hp), and the DL132/152, which tops out at 500 min-1 and lists 37 / 30 kW (49.6 / 40.2 hp). Machine weight is given as 6,850-12,800 kg (15,102-28,219 lb). A spread that wide means the foundation and lifting plan must be based on the figure for the configuration actually ordered. The control is a FANUC 32i-B with an 8.4 in colour LCD.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,200 mm (47.2 in) swing over the bed with between-centres lengths from 1,500 to 10,000 mm (59.1-393.7 in)
- Rated for 7,500 kg (16,535 lb) between centres
- Five optional spindle bores, 125 / 175 / 254 / 320 / 425 mm (4.9 / 6.9 / 10.0 / 12.6 / 16.7 in), above the 85 mm (3.3 in) standard bore
- Optional 37 / 30 kW (49.6 / 40.2 hp) spindle power in place of the standard 26 / 22 kW (34.9 / 29.5 hp)
- 10-630 min-1 in 2 gear ranges, so slow turning of large diameters has a range of its own
Limitations
- Spindle speed stops at 630 min-1, which holds down cutting speed on small diameters
- Diameter over the carriage is 800 mm (31.5 in); the 1,200 mm (47.2 in) swing is usable only ahead of the carriage
- The larger spindle bores and the 37 / 30 kW (49.6 / 40.2 hp) motor are options, not part of the standard machine
- The table lists 2 controlled axes (X, Z) and no C axis or driven tooling, so off-centre drilling and milling need another machine

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Swing over the bed is 1,200 mm (47.2 in) and swing over the carriage is 800 mm (31.5 in). Distance between centres is listed from 1,500 to 10,000 mm (59.1-393.7 in), and the maximum load between centres is 7,500 kg (16,535 lb). A part that extends past the carriage has to stay within the 800 mm (31.5 in) figure.
02
The standard bore is 85 mm (3.3 in). Dainichi lists optional bores of 125 / 175 / 254 / 320 / 425 mm (4.9 / 6.9 / 10.0 / 12.6 / 16.7 in). The larger bores matter for pipe and other hollow work that has to pass through the headstock. They are options, so the bore has to be fixed when the machine is specified.
03
The spindle runs 10-630 min-1 in 2 gear ranges. Standard power is listed as 26 / 22 kW (34.9 / 29.5 hp) and the optional motor as 37 / 30 kW (49.6 / 40.2 hp). With a 630 min-1 maximum the machine is set up for large diameters, where modest spindle speeds already give a workable cutting speed.
04
The DL95 is the faster, lower-powered neighbour: 900 min-1 and 18.5 / 15 kW (24.8 / 20.1 hp), with a machine weight of 6,600-11,700 kg (14,550-25,794 lb). The DL132/152 is slower and stronger at 500 min-1 and 37 / 30 kW (49.6 / 40.2 hp), and weighs 11,000-38,000 kg (24,251-83,776 lb). The DL120 itself lists 630 min-1, 26 / 22 kW (34.9 / 29.5 hp) and 6,850-12,800 kg (15,102-28,219 lb).
05
The control is a FANUC 32i-B with an 8.4 in colour LCD, controlling 2 axes (X, Z). The standard chuck is a 4-jaw of 600 mm (23.6 in). No driven-tool or C-axis function appears in the table, so plan the DL120 as a turning machine.
