Haas ST-35LY

The Haas ST-35LY puts a Y axis and a C axis on a long-bed, big-bore lathe: ± 2 in (± 51 mm) of Y travel, 62.5 in (1,588 mm) between centers and a 4.62 in (117.3 mm) spindle bore. Maximum turning diameter is 13.75 in (349 mm) with a 12 in (305 mm) chuck.

That combination is aimed at long parts with milled features: keyways, flats, cross-holes and off-centre drilling on shafts that would otherwise go to a mill for a second setup. The C axis positions to 0.01° and turns at up to 60 rpm on a 5 hp (3.7 kW) rating, and its 13.9 in (353 mm) brake holds 250 ft-lbf (339 N·m) while a tool cuts. Y-axis thrust is 2,300 lbf (10,231 N), a little under half the 5,100 lbf (22,686 N) available on Z, so plan feed-heavy drilling along Z where the part allows.

Rapids differ by axis. Z moves at 945 ipm (24 m/min); X and Y move at 472 ipm (12 m/min). On a bed this long the Z rate is the one that decides non-cutting time.

For turning, the spindle delivers 40 hp (29.8 kW) and 425 ft-lbf (576 N·m) at 325 rpm up to 3,200 rpm, or 1,400 ft-lbf (1,898 N·m) at 150 rpm with the optional gearbox. A programmable tailstock with a #4 Morse taper is standard. The steady rest provision and the automatic door are options. Against the ST-28LY, which turns 11.75 in (298 mm) over 42.5 in (1,080 mm), this model has the longer bed and the larger diameter on the same spindle rating.

Haas lists a starting price of US$202,995. The table for this model gives no live-tool speed, so confirm the driven-tool figures with Haas before estimating milling cycle times.
