Overview

The Chevalier FVL-2000VTC+C is the top of the FVL range: a 98.4 in (2,500 mm) vertical turning lathe with a C axis table and a live machining spindle in the ram. It is meant for the largest parts a shop will ever put on a chuck, machined complete so that they are lifted once.

At this scale every extra setup is a crane job. A hub or ring near the 26,400 lb (12,000 kg) table limit takes hours to move, level and indicate on another machine. Here the table becomes a 78.7 in (2,000 mm) rotary axis with a 0.001° minimum index angle, and the ram spindle drills, mills and taps at 25 to 2,500 rpm with No.50 taper tooling.

The ram has more reach than on the smaller +C models. Z travel is 41.3 in (1,050 mm) and the beam moves 43.3 in (1,100 mm) on W, so features can be machined at the top of a part up to 63.0 in (1,600 mm) high. X travel of -40.9 in, +56.3 in covers the full table radius and beyond the centre.

Turning figures match the FVL-2000VTC: 35,594 Nm of torque, with table speeds of High: 79 to 200 rpm and Low: 3 to 78 rpm. C axis rotation for milling is 3.3 rpm. The disk type changer handles BT50 tools up to 19.7 in (500 mm) long in 30 sec. Listed weight is 99,200 lb (45,000 kg) and floor space 312.6 in x 249.4 in x 252.6 in. A Fanuc 0i-T runs all axes.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Largest FVL model with live tooling: 98.4 in (2,500 mm) swing and a C axis table
  • 0.001° minimum index angle on a 78.7 in (2,000 mm) table
  • Ram reach of 41.3 in (1,050 mm) in Z plus 43.3 in (1,100 mm) of beam travel
  • 25 to 2,500 rpm machining spindle with ISO 7/24 No.50 taper
  • 35,594 Nm of turning torque and a 26,400 lb (12,000 kg) table load

Limitations

  • C axis turns at 3.3 rpm, so circular milling of a large diameter takes time
  • Live spindle power is not given in the maker's table
  • 252.6 in (6,415 mm) of machine height
  • Tool diameter is limited to Ø11 in in the changer's full cutter state
06

Best For

Very large hubs, rings and housings finished in a single lift Hole patterns and milled pads on parts up to 26,400 lb (12,000 kg) Hydro, wind and marine components Replacing a separate large boring mill operation

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What can the FVL-2000VTC+C do that the FVL-2000VTC cannot?

Mill, drill and tap. The +C version lists a machining spindle speed of 25 to 2,500 rpm, a C axis minimum index angle of 0.001° and a C axis rotation speed of 3.3 rpm. Turning capacity, weight and footprint are listed the same as for the FVL-2000VTC.

02 How high on a part can the live tool work?

Maximum turning height is 63.0 in (1,600 mm). Z travel is 41.3 in (1,050 mm) and the W axis beam travel is 43.3 in (1,100 mm), with up to 70.7 in (1,795 mm) from spindle nose to table surface.

03 What are the table load and torque?

Maximum table load is 26,400 lb (12,000 kg) and maximum torque 35,594 Nm. The table is 78.7 in (2,000 mm) in diameter and runs at High: 79 to 200 rpm or Low: 3 to 78 rpm for turning.

04 Which tool interface is used?

BT50 tool shanks with a JMBTA standard 45° pull stud, in a disk type tool changer. Maximum tool length is 19.7 in (500 mm) and tool change time is 30 sec. The machining spindle taper is ISO 7/24 No.50.
