How much does the Chevalier FNL-220LSY cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Chevalier FNL-220LSY that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Chevalier FNL-220LSY is a two-spindle turning center with live tooling and a Y axis, built to finish a bar part on both ends without an operator turning it around. The main spindle runs to 4,500 rpm with a 2.5 in (65 mm) bar capacity. The sub-spindle runs to 6,000 rpm, carries a 6 in (152 mm) chuck and passes 1.8 in (Ø45 mm) bar.
The sub-spindle rides on what the table calls the B axis, with 22.0 in (560 mm) of travel at 787 ipm (20 m/min). It comes across to take the part from the main chuck, pulls back, and presents the cut-off face to the same turret. Chevalier states that both spindles have a full C axis with a minimum interpolation of 0.001 degree, held by a hydraulic clamping cylinder with a disk brake for heavy milling.
The turret is a 16-station Power BMT45 type that indexes in 0.16 sec. Y-axis milling reaches ± 2.17 in off the centerline, which the maker claims is a larger work range than others in its class. Keyways, flats and cross holes away from centre are cut without C axis interpolation tricks.
Turning capacity is modest next to the 24.4 in (Ø620 mm) swing: a maximum cutting diameter of 10.6 in (Ø270 mm) and length of 20.1 in (510 mm). The bed is a single Meehanite casting with a torque tube design. The machine weighs 13,000 lb (5,900 kg), measures 161.8 in x 76.9 in x 83.5 in and uses a Fanuc 0i-T. The maker's travel and feed rows label their axes in an order that cannot be right, so they are not repeated here.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Main spindle at 4,500 rpm and sub-spindle at 6,000 rpm for complete machining of both ends
- 16-station Power BMT45 live turret with a 0.16 sec index time
- Y-axis milling ± 2.17 in off centerline, per the maker
- Full C axis on both spindles with 0.001 degree minimum interpolation
- 2.5 in (65 mm) bar capacity through a 3.0 in (77 mm) spindle bore
Limitations
- Maximum cutting diameter is 10.6 in (Ø270 mm) and cutting length 20.1 in (510 mm)
- No tailstock on this version; shaft work between centers is the job of the FNL-220LY
- Sub-spindle bar capacity is 1.8 in (Ø45 mm), smaller than the main spindle's
- The maker's table does not give usable X and Z travel figures or spindle power

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The FNL-220LSY has a sub-spindle: 6,000 rpm, a 6 in (152 mm) chuck and 22.0 in (560 mm) of B-axis travel. The FNL-220LY has a tailstock instead, with an MT5 quill and 22 in (560 mm) of servo travel. Turret, main spindle and Y axis are the same.
02
A Power BMT45 turret with 16 tool stations and a tool change time of 0.16 sec tool to tool. OD tool size is 3/4 in square on S.A.E. machines or 20 x 20 mm on metric ones, with boring bars of 1 1/4 in or 32 mm.
03
Chevalier's feature list gives ± 2.17 in of Y-axis off centerline milling. The travel row in the specification table lists its axes in an order that cannot be correct, so confirm X, Y and Z strokes with the maker.
04
Maximum bar capacity on the main spindle is 2.5 in (65 mm), through a 3.0 in (77 mm) bore with an A2-6 ASA nose. The sub-spindle has a 2.2 in (56 mm) bore and a bar capacity of 1.8 in (Ø45 mm).
