Overview

The Chevalier FBL-540 MC is the four-metre model of Chevalier's largest slant-bed lathes with the live tooling function. Z travel is 157.5 in (4,000 mm), and the machine weighs 59,400 lb (27,000 kg).

The case for driven tools gets stronger as the part gets longer. A shaft of this size takes hours to set up and true on any machine. If its keyways and drilled holes can be cut while it is still running between the chuck and the tailstock, a whole setup on a large boring mill disappears, and the features are located from the turned diameters themselves.

On paper, the FBL-540 MC and the FBL-540 are the same machine. Their columns in the maker's table match row for row: Ø37 in (940 mm) cutting diameter, 157.5 in (4,000 mm) cutting length, 19.3 in (490 mm) of X travel, 12 tools, the same floor space. The live tooling function is stated in the maker's feature list and nowhere in the figures, so the driven tool speed, power, tool interface and C-axis details all have to be requested.

The shared hardware is substantial. The tailstock is programmable over 157.5 in (4,000 mm) and has a hydraulic quill of 7.9 in (200 mm) diameter with an MT 6 taper. The spindle nose is A2-15 and the speed 1,000 rpm. Swing over the cover is Ø31.5 in (800 mm). The control is a Fanuc 0i-T, and the enclosure measures 378 in x 117.2 in x 99.6 in.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Live tooling function over 157.5 in (4,000 mm) of Z travel
  • Removes a separate milling setup on very long shafts
  • Ø37 in (940 mm) listed cutting diameter
  • Hydraulic MT 6 tailstock quill, 7.9 in (200 mm) in diameter
  • Net weight of 59,400 lb (27,000 kg)

Limitations

  • The table does not describe the live tooling at all
  • No Y axis is listed for milling off the spindle centerline
  • Spindle speed is 1,000 rpm
  • Occupies 378 in x 117.2 in of floor

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What separates the FBL-540 MC from the FBL-540?

The live tooling function, according to Chevalier's feature list. In the specification table the two columns are identical, with a Ø37 in (940 mm) cutting diameter, 157.5 in (4,000 mm) of cutting length and a net weight of 59,400 lb (27,000 kg) on both.

02 What are the travels of the FBL-540 MC?

X-axis travel is 19.3 in (490 mm) and Z-axis travel 157.5 in (4,000 mm). The tailstock also travels 157.5 in (4,000 mm) and is positioned by the program.

03 Which details are missing from the maker's page?

Driven tool speed and power, the tool system, C-axis data, steady rests and a spindle motor row. The spindle bore, bar capacity and quill travel rows are printed with inch and metric figures that contradict each other and are not shown here. The page states that the lathe features up to a 60HP spindle motor.

04 How much room does the machine need?

Floor space is 378 in x 117.2 in x 99.6 in (9,602 x 2,983 x 2,530 mm). Allow more at the tailstock end and overhead for loading long work by crane; the swing over the bed is Ø39.4 in (1,000 mm).
