Overview

The largest machine HNK lists in either vertical lathe series is the VTC-100/160: 16,000 mm (629.9 in) of swing and cutting diameter over a 10,000 mm (393.7 in) table, with a live milling spindle and a C-axis. Table load is 450,000 kg (992,063 lb).

At 16,000 mm the tool is working well outside the table's edge, and so is the milling spindle. The ram head travels from -300 to +8,350 mm (-11.8 to +328.7 in), which means a hole pattern on the outer flange of a ring this size is drilled with the head near the end of the rail. The C-axis indexes that flange in 0.001 degree increments at 0 to 0.3 rpm. A small angular error becomes a long arc at such a radius, so ask HNK for the positioning accuracy that the catalogue does not state.

The milling spindle is the VTC-80/100 unit: ISO 50, about 1,500 rpm, A.C 45/55 kW (60.3/73.8 hp), cont/30min. The table drive is also shared, D.C 265 kW (355.4 hp), here for a top speed of about 15 rpm in two steps.

Turning height is 6,000 mm (236.2 in), with the rail moving 500 mm (19.7 in) x 9 steps. The ram is 400 x 400, 500 x 500 or 600 x 600 mm (15.7 x 15.7, 19.7 x 19.7 or 23.6 x 23.6 in) with 2,200 to 3,500 mm (86.6 to 137.8 in) of Z in four listed lengths. Controls: Fanuc 31i-B, Siemens 840D.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 16,000 mm (629.9 in) swing with milling and drilling capability
  • 450,000 kg (992,063 lb) table load
  • X travel from -300 to +8,350 mm (-11.8 to +328.7 in)
  • A.C 45/55 kW (60.3/73.8 hp) milling motor on an ISO 50 spindle

Limitations

  • No positioning accuracy is published for the C-axis at this radius
  • About 15 rpm table speed and about 1,500 rpm milling speed
  • Same D.C 265 kW (355.4 hp) table drive as the VTC-80/100

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large is the VTC-100/160?

It has a 10,000 mm (393.7 in) table, a maximum swing and cutting diameter of 16,000 mm (629.9 in), 6,000 mm (236.2 in) of turning height and a 450,000 kg (992,063 lb) table load. HNK's page gives no overall machine dimensions or weight.

02 Can the VTC-100/160 drill at the full 16,000 mm diameter?

The ram head, which carries the milling spindle, reaches +8,350 mm (+328.7 in) from centre, so it covers the full radius. The table positions the part as a C-axis with 0.001 degree indexing at 0 to 0.3 rpm.

03 Is the VTC-100/160 different from the VTC-80/100 in power?

No. Both list D.C 265 kW (355.4 hp) for the table and A.C 45/55 kW (60.3/73.8 hp) for milling. The VTC-100/160 has the larger table and swing and carries 450,000 kg (992,063 lb) at about 15 rpm, where the VTC-80/100 carries 350,000 kg (771,605 lb) at about 20 rpm.

04 What does the turning-only version of the VTC-100/160 look like?

That is the NT-100/160. It has the same table, swing, 450,000 kg (992,063 lb) load and rail, without the milling spindle and C-axis rows.
