Overview

The Chevalier FBL-360L MC combines the two options of the family, the long bed and the live turret. It offers 82.6 in (2,100 mm) of Z travel, 90.5 in between centers and a 12-station BMT-75 driven turret, for long parts that need keyways, cross holes or milled flats as well as turning.

Long shafts are awkward to move. Taking one from a lathe to a mill means slinging it, supporting it again and finding the journals a second time. Here the milled features are cut with the shaft still held between the chuck and the tailstock, so a keyway stays in line with the diameter it belongs to.

Maximum cutting length is 78.6 in and cutting diameter 17.7 in (452 mm). The tailstock is programmable and travels 78.7 in (2,000 mm). Both length rows for this model, cutting length and distance between centers, are printed without a metric unit on the maker's page, so they appear here in inches only.

There is no Y axis in the table. Slots and flats are therefore milled on centre, and anything offset has to be produced by turning the spindle and moving X together. The spindle itself is the family's A2-11 unit: 2,500 rpm, with a 4.1 in / 5.2 in (105 / 134 mm) bore. Net weight is 28,313 lb (12,760 kg), which is the weight the maker also gives for the FBL-360BL. The control is a Fanuc 0i-T.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the FBL-360L MC add over the FBL-360BL?

A driven turret. The FBL-360L MC lists a BMT-75 tool system with 12 tools; the FBL-360BL lists 10 tools, 12 as an option, and no tool system. In exchange the maximum cutting diameter is 17.7 in (452 mm), against 22.4 in (570 mm) on the FBL-360BL.

02 What are the length figures for this model?

Maximum cutting length is 78.6 in and distance between centers 90.5 in. Z-axis travel is 82.6 in (2,100 mm) and tailstock travel 78.7 in (2,000 mm). The first two are shown in inches only because the maker's metric cells for them carry no unit.

03 Why is the model called L MC and not BL MC?

That is how Chevalier prints the column heading on its product page: FBL-360L MC, next to FBL-360B, FBL-360BL and FBL-360B MC. The page gives no explanation for the dropped letter, and the table treats it as the long-bed counterpart of the FBL-360B MC.

04 Which spindle does the FBL-360L MC use?

An A2-11 spindle nose with a spindle hole diameter of 4.1 in / 5.2 in (105 / 134 mm) and a spindle speed of 2,500 rpm. Maximum bar material diameter is 3.5 in / 4.5 in (91 / 115 mm). The maker's page mentions up to a 50HP spindle motor for the series.
