Overview

The Chevalier FBL-250SY is a box-way turning center with a Y axis, live tooling and a sub-spindle, sized around an 8 in (203 mm) chuck and an 18.1 in (Ø460 mm) maximum cutting diameter. Where Chevalier's FNL-220LSY is a compact bar machine limited to 10.6 in (Ø270 mm), this one has the swing and the bed for chucked castings and forgings as well.

Chevalier builds it on a dual 30-degree slant bed with box ways, which it credits with rigidity and smooth motion in heavy-duty machining. Box ways trade some rapid speed for damping, and the feed rates show it: 945 / 394 / 945 ipm (24 / 10 / 24 m/min) for X, Y and Z.

Both spindles are listed at 4,500 rpm with A2-6 ASA noses. The main spindle has a 3.0 in (77 mm) bore and 2.5 in (65 mm) bar capacity; the sub-spindle has a 6 in (152 mm) chuck and a 2.2 in (56 mm) bore. The sub-spindle travels 24.4 in (620 mm) on the B axis at 945 ipm (24 m/min) to pick the part off.

The turret is a Power BMT60 type. The table gives the number of tools as 12 (16), and the maker's feature list speaks of 12 tool stations. Both spindles index to 0.001° on C. Maximum cutting length is 22 in (558 mm). The machine is short for its capacity at 119.1 in wide, weighs 12,787 lb (5,800 kg) and runs a Fanuc 0i-T. The maker's travel row lists its axes in an order that cannot be right and is not repeated here.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Sub-spindle with 24.4 in (620 mm) of B-axis travel for back-end machining
  • 18.1 in (Ø460 mm) maximum cutting diameter on a 23.6 in (Ø600 mm) swing
  • Dual 30-degree slant bed with box ways for heavy cuts
  • Power BMT60 live turret with driven tool stations
  • Compact 119.1 in x 74.2 in footprint

Limitations

  • Y-axis feed rate is 394 ipm (10 m/min), well below the 945 ipm of X and Z
  • Main and sub-spindle are both limited to 4,500 rpm
  • The table does not give a usable sub-spindle bar capacity, X and Z travel or spindle power
  • 8 in (203 mm) chuck only; larger chucks start with the FBL-250Y and FBL-320SY

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does SY mean on the FBL-250SY?

The model has a sub-spindle and a Y axis. Its table lists a sub-spindle with a maximum speed of 4,500 rpm, a 6 in (152 mm) chuck and an A2-6 ASA nose, plus B-axis travel of 24.4 in (620 mm). The FBL-250Y has a tailstock instead.

02 How many tools does the turret hold?

The specification row reads 12 (16) and the turret type is Power BMT60. Chevalier's feature list refers to a BMT60 turret with 12 tool stations, so ask what the bracketed 16 requires before counting on it.

03 What are the feed rates?

The feed rate row gives 945 / 394 / 945 ipm (24 / 10 / 24 m/min) for X, Y and Z, and 945 ipm (24 m/min) for the B axis. The C axis is listed at 200 rpm with a 0.001° increment.

04 What bar and chuck sizes apply?

The main chuck is 8 in (203 mm), with a maximum bar capacity of 2.5 in (65 mm) through a 3.0 in (77 mm) spindle bore. The sub-spindle chuck is 6 in (152 mm) with a 2.2 in (56 mm) bore.
