Overview

The Haas ST-15LY combines the ST-15's big-bore-in-a-small-package design with a long bed and Y-axis mill-turn capability. With 610 mm (24 in) of Z-travel, +/-51 mm (+/-2.0 in) of Y-axis travel, and a BMT45 turret with 4,000 RPM live tooling, the ST-15LY handles complex longer parts that need both turning and milling in a single setup.

The A2-6 spindle delivers 14.9 kW (20 hp) and 203 Nm (150 ft-lb) of torque at 500 RPM, with a max speed of 4,000 RPM. The 63.5 mm (2.5 in) bar capacity and 210 mm (8.3 in) chuck step up meaningfully from the ST-10LY's 1.75-inch bore, covering the most common production bar stock sizes.

Max cutting diameter is approximately 279 mm (11 in) with the BMT45 turret. Axis travels are 200 mm (7.9 in) in X, +/-51 mm in Y, and 610 mm (24 in) in Z. Rapids run at 12 m/min (472 ipm) on X and Y, and 30.5 m/min (1,200 ipm) on Z. The C-axis holds +/-0.01 degrees for precision milling and positioning.

The ST-15LY occupies a sweet spot for shops running 2.5-inch bar stock on longer parts with off-center features. Hydraulic fittings, connector bodies, and instrumentation housings that need cross-drilling, flat milling, and tapping along their length are classic applications.

At roughly $115,000-$140,000 configured, the ST-15LY is a compact long-bed mill-turn machine that eliminates second-op VMC work on parts that the standard ST-15Y can't accommodate due to length. The NGC control handles Y-axis and C-axis programming without specialized training.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2.5-inch bar capacity with Y-axis and live tooling on a long bed — the smallest Haas long-bed mill-turn with this bore size
  • 610 mm (24 in) Z-axis travel handles longer complex parts that exceed the standard ST-15Y bed
  • BMT45 turret with 4,000 RPM live tooling enables cross-drilling, flat milling, and tapping on longer parts
  • A2-6 spindle nose and 3.5-inch bore match the ST-20 platform workholding systems
  • 20 hp with 150 ft-lb torque handles steel and stainless at production feeds
  • Compact footprint keeps floor space manageable for smaller shops adding long-bed mill-turn capability

Limitations

  • 4,000 RPM max spindle speed limits small-diameter aluminum finishing compared to the ST-10LY's 6,000 RPM
  • BMT45 turret is smaller than the BMT-65 on the ST-20LY, limiting milling aggressiveness
  • 20 hp spindle is modest for heavy roughing in stainless or tough alloys on longer parts
  • 30-gallon coolant tank may be undersized for sustained production with live tooling

Best For

Hydraulic fitting and connector manufacturers running 2.5-inch bar stock with cross-features on longer parts Job shops needing compact long-bed Y-axis capability for complex mid-size bar work Medical and precision component shops machining longer parts with off-center drilling and milling Shops upgrading from the ST-15Y that need extended Z-travel for longer part families Production facilities running parts with combined turning and milling requirements exceeding 16-inch length

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas ST-15LY cost?

Base price starts around $115,000. Adding sub-spindle option, parts catcher, chip conveyor, and common options pushes the configured price to $130,000-$140,000. The long-bed Y-axis premium over the standard ST-15 is approximately $60,000-$65,000.

02 What is the difference between the ST-15Y and ST-15LY?

The ST-15LY adds approximately 200 mm (8 in) of Z-axis travel, going from 406 mm to 610 mm (24 in). The spindle, Y-axis, turret, and live tooling are identical. Choose the LY when your parts with off-center features regularly exceed the standard bed length.

03 Should I buy the ST-15LY or the ST-20LY?

The ST-20LY has a larger cutting envelope, 6,000 RPM live tooling on a BMT-65 turret, and more Z-travel at 813 mm (32 in). The ST-15LY is more compact and affordable with the same 2.5-inch bore and 20 hp. Choose the ST-15LY when parts fit within 12 x 20 inches. Choose the ST-20LY for larger parts or more aggressive milling.

04 Can the ST-15LY run with a sub-spindle?

Yes. The ST-15LY can be ordered with an optional sub-spindle for back-working operations. The sub-spindle combined with Y-axis and live tooling creates a comprehensive done-in-one manufacturing cell for complex longer parts.
