Overview

The Bourn & Koch MT³ is a CNC vertical grinder that can also mill, drill, tap and turn. The name is short for moving table modular technology machine tool. Its standard table is 42.00 in (1,066.8 mm) in diameter, maximum swing is 49.00 in (1,244.6 mm), and the workpiece can weigh up to 4,400 lb (2,000 kg).

The layout is unusual for a vertical grinder, because it comes from a rotary surface grinder: Bourn & Koch says the machine is built off of the Blanchard 22AD-42 platform and uses its core components. The table moves 30.00 in (762 mm) in X on a precision servo-cylinder assembly, and the spindle head travels 36.00 in (914.4 mm) in Z on the column. It is listed as 2-axis CNC, with virtual Y-axis programming for off axis machining and grinding. The work spindle is infinitely variable over 0-100 rpm, with 200 rpm optional.

The spindle is where the modular idea shows. It can be swapped out, manually or by an optional robot cell that changes tools and spindles, so one machine can carry a grinding spindle for one job and a milling or turning spindle for the next. Grinding spindle power is 40.2 hp (30 kW). Maximum rotating tool diameter is 6.7 in (170.18 mm) on an HSK-50 connection, and the maker notes that this limit depends on connection size, so confirm wheel size for the spindle you intend to order.

A Fanuc CNC control is fitted, the model depending on the options chosen, with Bourn & Koch's conversational HMI; functions can also be programmed through CAM software or M & G code. A diamond dresser and automatic lubrication are standard. A chiller, linear scales for the X and Z axes, a roll dresser for CBN or vitrified grinding wheels and a coolant filtration system with integral chip conveyor are options. The machine weighs approximately 36,000 lb (16,330 kg) and is listed for 480 Volt / 3 Phase / 60 Hertz power.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • One platform for vertical grinding, milling, drilling, tapping and turning through interchangeable spindles
  • 40.2 hp (30 kW) grinding spindle on a column of stress-relieved steel weldment with concrete polymer
  • 49.00 in (1,244.6 mm) maximum swing and a 4,400 lb (2,000 kg) maximum workpiece weight
  • Virtual Y-axis programming for off axis machining and grinding is a standard feature
  • Optional robot cell for tool and spindle change

Limitations

  • Maximum rotating tool diameter is 6.7 in (170.18 mm) on HSK-50, which caps wheel size
  • Linear scales for the X and Z axes are optional equipment, not standard
  • Work spindle speed is 0-100 rpm as standard; 200 rpm is an option
  • The coolant filtration system with integral chip conveyor and the roll dresser are optional equipment
  • Electrical supply is listed as 480 Volt / 3 Phase / 60 Hertz only

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does MT³ stand for?

Bourn & Koch says MT³ is short for moving table modular technology machine tool. The table moves on the X-axis, 30.00 in (762 mm), and the spindle system is interchangeable, so the machine can be set up for grinding, milling, drilling, tapping or turning.

02 How large a part fits on the MT³?

The standard table diameter is 42.00 in (1,066.8 mm) and the maximum table diameter is 48.00 in (1,219.2 mm). Maximum swing is 49.00 in (1,244.6 mm), Z-axis travel is 36.00 in (914.4 mm) and the maximum workpiece weight is 4,400 lb (2,000 kg).

03 Is the MT³ related to the Blanchard grinders?

Yes. Bourn & Koch states that it is built off of the Blanchard 22AD-42 platform, using the core components of that machine with an interchangeable spindle system. The column is a stress-relieved steel weldment with concrete polymer, and the spindle head and table are mounted on preloaded precision linear roller guide ways.

04 What control does the MT³ use?

A Fanuc CNC control, with the model dependent on the options chosen, plus the Bourn & Koch Human Machine Interface. The conversational HMI guides the operator through the grinding process. Further functions can be programmed with CAM software or M & G code, and a remote pendant control is optional.

05 Can the MT³ change its own spindles?

With the optional robot cell for tool and spindle change, yes. Without it the spindle is swapped manually. Standard milling, grinding and turning spindles are listed as optional equipment, along with custom spindles per application.
