Overview
Six of AWEA's BL boring mills use the quill head, and the AWEA BL-3024S is the one with 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of X under the tall column. Y travel is 2,400 mm (94.5 in), Z is 1,300 mm (51.2 in) and the quill adds 600 mm (23.6 in) on W.
Start with the tooling, because on a boring mill it sets the limits. The taper is BT50. A tool can be 400 mm (15.7 in) long and weigh 25 kg (55 lb); its diameter can be Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) in a full magazine or Ø250 mm (Ø9.8 in) with empty neighbours. Anything bigger is outside what the changer is listed for. Forty tools is the standard count.
Behind those tools is a geared spindle: 2,400 rpm at the top, 1,308 Nm (965 lb-ft) of torque, and according to AWEA the maximum is reached under 189 rpm. A Ø250 mm cutter runs slowly in steel, so this is where the gear box pays off.
Structure and drives are common to the series. AWEA cites FEM analysis for the castings and linear guide ways on the feed axes. Ball screws are driven directly by FANUC αi series motors.
