Overview

The Anger Machining THA-4000(P) is a compact 4-axis horizontal machining center with a 400x400 mm pallet, built for series production of aluminium and cast parts. Travels are 610 mm (24.0 in) in X and Y and 660 mm (26.0 in) in Z, and the largest part is Ø630/800 mm at up to 400 kg (882 lb).

Cycle time is where the figures stand out. Chip-to-chip is 2.6 s, the pallet changer swaps in 8 s, and a 180° rotation of the A-axis, as the table labels it, takes 0.5 s. All three linear axes accelerate at 10 m/s². For a line making differential housings or brake calipers, two of the parts Anger names, those figures matter more than raw spindle power.

The spindle is a direct-drive unit. Anger's headline version runs at 15,000 rpm with 15/37 kW and 102/249 Nm (S1/S6-15%), and a 20,000 rpm alternative is listed with lower torque. The interface is BBT-40, with HSK63 in brackets. Through-spindle coolant at 70 bar is an option, not standard.

What sets this size apart from the THA-5000(P) is the magazine. Five capacities are listed, 40, 60, 90, 120 and 240 tools, where the THA-5000(P) table shows 40 tools with 60 tools in brackets. Tools are limited to Ø80 mm, 410 mm in length and 12 kg. The B-axis is a worm-drive rotary table with hydraulic clamping and 0.01° indexing.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Chip-to-chip time of 2.6 s and a pallet change of 8 s keep non-cutting time short
  • Magazine options of 40, 60, 90, 120 or 240 tools
  • 15,000 rpm direct-drive spindle with 102/249 Nm (S1/S6-15%)
  • Axis acceleration of 10/10/10 m/s² on X/Y/Z
  • Rotary table with hydraulic clamping, 6.5 tons of clamping force and 0.01° indexing

Limitations

  • Pallet is 400x400 mm and table load 400 kg, so larger castings need the THA-5000(P)
  • Maximum tool diameter is Ø80 mm, which limits large face mills and boring tools
  • The 70 bar through-spindle coolant is optional
  • Four axes only: the table lists no 5-axis version

Best For

Series production of aluminium housings on 400x400 mm pallets Brake calipers, valve bodies and differential housings Parts that need many tools, with magazines of up to 240 tools Drilling and tapping cycles with frequent tool changes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How fast are tool and pallet changes on the THA-4000(P)?

The specification table gives a chip-to-chip time of 2.6 s at 1,800 rpm and a changeover time of 8 s for the automatic pallet changer. In its feature text Anger also quotes a tool change of 1.4 seconds. The pallet changer is described as optional, so check that it is in the quoted scope.

02 What are the travels and part size?

X and Y travel are both 610 mm (24.0 in) and Z is 660 mm (26.0 in). The maximum part size is Ø630/800 mm, the pallet is 400x400 mm and the table load is 400 kg (882 lb).

03 Which spindle options are listed?

Two speeds: 15,000 rpm and 20,000 rpm. The first is rated 15/37 kW and 102/249 Nm (S1/S6-15%). The second appears in brackets as 30/40 kW and 29.1/38.7 Nm (S6-40%). The table heads this block SPINDLE (FANUC), and the tool holder is BBT-40 with HSK63 as the alternative.

04 What controls and services does it need?

Siemens and Fanuc are the listed NC controls. The machine connects to 3x380 V with 45 kVA of total connected power, weighs 9,000 kg (19,841 lb), and the lubrication row reads CL. Dimensions are given as 2,120/4,955(5,707)/2,831 mm (L/W/H).

05 How does it compare with the THA-5000(P)?

The THA-5000(P) is the larger frame: 730 mm of X and Y travel, 830 mm of Z, a 500x500 mm pallet and 500 kg of table load. The THA-4000(P) is the one with the big magazine options, up to 240 tools, and the quicker chip-to-chip time, 2.6 s against 3 s on the THA-5000(P). Spindle data and the 8 s pallet change are the same for both.
