Overview

The Amada DPG150 is a CNC digital profile grinder designed for high-precision grinding of complex tool and die profiles. Built by Amada Machinery America, the DPG150 uses optical profile grinding technology with CNC automation to produce intricate contours on punches, dies, and precision components.

The DPG150 features a working surface of 400 x 250 mm on its sub-table with a height-to-focus-point range of 60-185 mm. Five CNC axes provide comprehensive motion control: Z-axis traverse of 300 mm, V-axis cross feed of 150 mm, A-axis vertical of 125 mm, plus X-axis wheelhead traverse of 200 mm and Y-axis wheelhead cross of 150 mm. Rapid feed rates hit 2,000 mm/min on the table and 1,500 mm/min on the wheelhead, with grinding feed programmable from 0.1 to 1,000 mm/min.

The high-speed spindle accepts wheels from 65-100 mm diameter and rotates from 2,000 to 20,000 min-1. Radial relief angle ranges from -2 to 20 degrees, axial relief covers ±15 degrees. The DPG150 is available with an optional robot loader (machine weight increases to 5,500 kg from 4,500-5,000 kg). Power requirement is 18 kVA at less than 70 dB noise.

New DPG150 systems price between $250,000 and $400,000, with robot loader adding $80,000-$120,000.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Five CNC axes with high-speed spindle (2,000-20,000 RPM) enable complex profile grinding
  • Radial relief -2 to 20 deg and axial ±15 deg allow direct clearance angle grinding
  • Grinding feed 0.1-1,000 mm/min provides precise stock removal control
  • Optional robot loader enables lights-out production
  • Sub-70 dB noise level suitable for climate-controlled tool rooms
  • Purpose-built for punch and die tooling applications

Limitations

  • Entry price of $250K-$400K steep for occasional profile grinding needs
  • Limited working envelope (400 x 250 mm sub-table) restricts to smaller components
  • Specialized application limits utility outside tool and die work
  • Proprietary control requires dedicated operator training
05

Best For

Tool and die shops producing complex profile punches and dies Stamping die manufacturers grinding carbide and hardened steel tooling Medical device tooling with tight profile geometry requirements High-volume shops leveraging robot loader for lights-out production Mold shops grinding optical-quality profiles on precision inserts

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is a digital profile grinder?

A CNC-automated optical profile grinder. The DPG150 digitizes the traditional process where operators follow templates on projection screens -- profiles are programmed via CNC with sub-micron accuracy.

02 What materials can it grind?

Hardened tool steels (HRC 60+), carbide, ceramics. The 20,000 RPM spindle handles both CBN and diamond abrasives.

03 What does the robot loader add?

Approximately $80,000-$120,000 for unattended production. Machine weight increases to 5,500 kg.

04 How does it compare to a jig grinder?

Jig grinders excel at precision hole grinding. The DPG150 is optimized for complex external contours on punch and die components with relief angle capability.
