Overview

The Vollmer QM eco select is a disc erosion machine for PCD-tipped tools. A rotating electrode erodes the cutting edges, and the tool is measured and eroded in one clamping. It takes milling cutters up to 250 mm (9.8 in) in outer diameter, shank-type tools from 10 to 100 mm (0.4 to 3.9 in) and discoid tools up to 380 mm (15.0 in), or up to 600 mm (23.6 in) with support. Tool weight stops at 20 kg (44 lb).

Five axes are under CNC control: X, Y, Z, A and E. The E axis pivots the disc-shaped electrode through ±70° to produce radial clearance angles, which the table gives as -15° to 6°. B and C are adjusted by hand, over ±30° and 210°. That split is what a buyer should look at first. A shop that changes tool types several times a shift will be resetting those two axes manually each time.

Linear travel is 280 mm (11.0 in) in X and Y and 330 mm (13.0 in) in Z, with the tool held in an ISO 40 tapered holder on an A axis that rotates through 360°. Cutting edge length is up to 100 mm (3.9 in) on milling cutters and shank tools but only up to 20 mm (0.8 in) on discoid tools, so the machine suits narrow saw-like bodies and hoggers better than wide profile discs.

The electrode spindle runs from 80 to 1,500 rpm on a drive of approx. 2.6 kW (3.5 hp). Face electrodes go up to 125 mm (4.9 in), peripheral ones from 28 to 150 mm (1.1 to 5.9 in). Vollmer supplies a basic software package as standard and offers up to three more (hogger, profile tools, saw blades), which it says can be added later. The connected load is 3.4 kW / 4.5 kVA and the machine weighs approx. 3,000 kg (6,614 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Covers three tool families on one machine: milling cutters to 250 mm (9.8 in), shank tools from 10 to 100 mm (0.4 to 3.9 in) and discoid tools to 380 mm (15.0 in)
  • Measuring and eroding take place in one clamping operation, with an automatic measuring device listed in the table
  • CNC-controlled E axis with ±70° of pivot sets the radial clearance angle without moving the tool
  • Vollmer states finishing values of Ra < 0.2 µm, with up to four eroding stages selectable in every program
  • Low connected load of 3.4 kW / 4.5 kVA and a weight of approx. 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) ease installation

Limitations

  • The B and C axes are adjusted manually, so changing between tool geometries involves hand setting
  • Discoid tools are limited to a cutting edge length of 20 mm (0.8 in)
  • Tool weight is capped at 20 kg (44 lb), which rules out heavy cutter bodies even when the diameter fits
  • Only the basic software package is standard; the hogger, profile tool and saw blade packages are add-ons
  • No workpiece loader or magazine appears in the table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What tools can the Vollmer QM eco select machine?

Tools with PCD cutting edges in three groups. Milling cutters go up to 250 mm (9.8 in) in outer diameter with a cutting edge length of up to 100 mm (3.9 in). Shank-type tools run from 10 to 100 mm (0.4 to 3.9 in). Discoid tools go up to 380 mm (15.0 in), or 600 mm (23.6 in) with support, with a cutting edge up to 20 mm (0.8 in) long. The heaviest tool allowed is 20 kg (44 lb).

02 Which axes of the QM eco select are CNC controlled?

X, Y, Z, A and E are CNC controlled, and Vollmer describes them as 5 simultaneously controlled CNC axes. The B and C axes are adjusted manually. B has a pivot range of ±30° and C covers 210°, while the E axis pivots the electrode through ±70°.

03 How large are the electrodes and how fast do they turn?

A face rotary electrode can be up to 125 mm (4.9 in) in outer diameter. A peripheral rotary electrode in tungsten-copper runs from 28 to 150 mm (1.1 to 5.9 in). Bore diameters are 10, 15 and 60 mm. The speed range is 80 to 1,500 rpm and the drive output is approx. 2.6 kW (3.5 hp).

04 What software comes with the machine?

The standard version includes a basic package. Vollmer lists up to three additional packages, for hoggers, profile tools and saw blades, and says the add-ons can be retrofitted at any time. Programs offer up to four eroding stages: coarse roughing, roughing, finishing and fine finishing.

05 What does the QM eco select need at installation?

The connected load is 3.4 kW / 4.5 kVA. The dielectric system holds 118 l and its pump delivers 60 l/min. The machine weighs approx. 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) and stands on a polymer concrete sub-structure, so check floor loading and access for that mass.
