Overview

The Takisawa TS-4000 is a 10 in (254 mm) chuck turning centre with live tools, built on an A2-8 main spindle nose with 82 mm (3.2 in) of bar capacity, 22 kW (29.5 hp) and a top speed of 4,200 rpm. Next to the TS-2000 and TS-3000 it has the largest left spindle and the longest turning length, 750 mm (29.5 in) on the standard 12-station turret.

What does not scale up is everything around that spindle. Maximum turning diameter is 370 mm (14.6 in), the same as on the TS-2000 and TS-3000. The right spindle of the TS-4000YS still carries a 6 in (152 mm) chuck and is rated 11 / 7.5 kW (14.8 / 10.1 hp) at 6,000 rpm, half the power of the left. Live tools are 6,000 rpm with 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) at S3 25% and 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) continuous. So the extra capacity is for bar diameter, gripping size and heavy first-operation turning, not for larger swing or stronger milling.

That makes the choice between the two versions matter. The TS-4000Y has an NC servo tailstock where the YS has its right spindle, and with 750 mm of turning length and 22 kW available it is the configuration for shafts that need support under a heavy cut. The TS-4000YS is for parts cut from 82 mm bar or chucked at 10 in and then handed to the right spindle for a light back operation. The A axis rapids at 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) on the YS and 13 m/min on the Y. X and Z are listed at 30 m/min and Y at 10 m/min (394 in/min).

The all-holder turret has 12 stations as standard, with 10, 15 or 20 as options. Only the 15-station turret shortens the turning length, to 735 mm (28.9 in). Diameter drops to 315 mm (12.4 in) on the 15-station turret and 292 mm (11.5 in) on the 20-station turret.

The longer bed shows in the footprint: 3,000 × 2,140 mm (118.1 × 84.3 in) for the TS-4000YS and 3,000 × 2,070 mm (118.1 × 81.5 in) for the TS-4000Y, without oil pan and chip conveyor, at 2,300 mm (90.6 in) high. The table lists 6,200 kg (13,668 lb) and 6,000 kg (13,228 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 22 / 15 kW (29.5 / 20.1 hp) left spindle on an A2-8 nose with a 10 in (254 mm) chuck
  • 82 mm (3.2 in) bar capacity, against 67 mm (2.6 in) on the TS-3000
  • 750 mm (29.5 in) of turning length with the standard 12-station turret
  • TS-4000Y version pairs the 22 kW (29.5 hp) spindle with an NC servo tailstock for shaft work
  • 6,000 rpm live tools and a 6,000 rpm right spindle on the TS-4000YS

Limitations

  • Maximum turning diameter stays at 370 mm (14.6 in) despite the 10 in (254 mm) chuck
  • Right spindle is limited to a 6 in (152 mm) chuck and 11 / 7.5 kW (14.8 / 10.1 hp)
  • Left spindle top speed is 4,200 rpm, lower than the 6,000 rpm of the TS-2000
  • Live-tool power is 7.5 / 3.7 kW (10.1 / 5.0 hp), small next to the 22 kW (29.5 hp) turning spindle
  • Footprint grows to 3,000 × 2,140 mm (118.1 × 84.3 in) on the TS-4000YS

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How much bigger is the TS-4000 than the TS-3000?

In the left spindle and the bed. The TS-3000 has an A2-6 nose, an 8 in (203 mm) chuck, 67 mm (2.6 in) of bar capacity, 15 / 11 kW (20.1 / 14.8 hp) and 550 mm (21.7 in) of turning length. The TS-4000 has an A2-8 nose, a 10 in (254 mm) chuck, 82 mm (3.2 in), 22 / 15 kW (29.5 / 20.1 hp) and 750 mm (29.5 in). Maximum turning diameter is 370 mm (14.6 in) on both, and the TS-3000 has the higher top speed at 5,000 rpm.

02 Is the right spindle as strong as the left?

No. On the TS-4000YS the left spindle is rated 22 / 15 kW (29.5 / 20.1 hp) at up to 4,200 rpm with a 10 in (254 mm) chuck. The right spindle is rated 11 / 7.5 kW (14.8 / 10.1 hp) at up to 6,000 rpm with a 6 in (152 mm) chuck. Plan the heavy cuts and the large gripping diameters for the first operation.

03 What does the TS-4000Y have instead of a right spindle?

An NC servo tailstock. The TS-4000Y carries a single 10 in (254 mm) chuck, weighs 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) and takes 3,000 × 2,070 mm (118.1 × 81.5 in) of floor without oil pan and chip conveyor. Its A axis is listed at 13 m/min, against 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) on the TS-4000YS.

04 How long a part can the TS-4000 turn?

750 mm (29.5 in) with the standard 12-station turret, and the same with the optional 10-station or 20-station turret. The 15-station turret is listed at 735 mm (28.9 in). Maximum turning diameter is 370 mm (14.6 in) with the 12-station or 10-station turret, 315 mm (12.4 in) with the 15-station turret and 292 mm (11.5 in) with the 20-station turret.

05 How much floor space does the TS-4000 need?

The TS-4000YS is listed at 3,000 × 2,140 mm (118.1 × 84.3 in) and the TS-4000Y at 3,000 × 2,070 mm (118.1 × 81.5 in), both 2,300 mm (90.6 in) high. Those figures leave out the oil pan and chip conveyor, so the installed footprint is larger. Listed weight is 6,200 kg (13,668 lb) for the YS and 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) for the Y.
