Overview

The Takisawa TMX-2000 is a B-axis multi-tasking machine with an 8 in (203 mm) chuck, a 500 mm (19.7 in) maximum turning diameter and 610 mm (24.0 in) of turning length. It is built in two versions: the TMX-2000 with an NC servo tailstock, and the TMX-2000S with a right spindle stock and a second 8 in chuck.

The table gives the travels: 640 mm (25.2 in) in X, 230 mm (9.1 in) in Y and 690 mm (27.2 in) in Z. The Y stroke is the figure to look at first, because it sets how wide a flat or how far off centre a hole can be on a part that may be 500 mm across. X, Y and Z all rapid at 40 m/min (1,575 in/min); the A axis is slower at 20 m/min (787 in/min). The B axis swings through 230° (±115°).

The tool spindle runs to 12,000 rpm on a motor rated 11 kW (14.8 hp) at S3 25% and 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) continuous. That is modest milling power for a machine that swings 500 mm: fine for finishing, drilling and pocketing with small cutters at speed, less so for heavy face milling. The left spindle reaches 5,000 rpm with 15 kW (20.1 hp) at 30-min and 11 kW continuous. On the TMX-2000S the right spindle also reaches 5,000 rpm but has 11 / 7.5 kW, and its bar capacity is 51 mm (2.0 in) against 65 mm (2.6 in) on the left.

Tool capacity is 40, with 80 as an option. Which version to buy depends on the parts. The tailstock version supports shafts within the 610 mm turning length. The S version takes the part over to finish its back face without a second setup. The S weighs 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) and the tailstock machine 13,700 kg (30,203 lb).

Floor space is 4,150 × 2,923 mm (163.4 × 115.1 in) and the height is 2,783 mm (109.6 in). Next to the TMX-4000, which turns 1,500 mm (59.1 in) and weighs 17,000 kg (37,478 lb), this is the short-bed machine for chucking parts and short shafts.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 500 mm (19.7 in) maximum turning diameter on an 8 in (203 mm) chuck machine
  • 12,000 rpm tool spindle on a B axis with a 230° (±115°) range
  • 230 mm (9.1 in) of Y travel with 640 mm (25.2 in) in X and 690 mm (27.2 in) in Z
  • 40-tool capacity as standard, 80 as an option
  • TMX-2000S adds a 5,000 rpm right spindle with its own 8 in chuck and 51 mm (2.0 in) bar capacity
  • 40 m/min (1,575 in/min) rapids in X, Y and Z

Limitations

  • Tool spindle power is 11 / 7.5 kW (14.8 / 10.1 hp), S3 25% against continuous, which limits heavy milling
  • Turning length is 610 mm (24.0 in); the TMX-4000 turns 1,500 mm (59.1 in)
  • The right spindle on the TMX-2000S has 11 / 7.5 kW (14.8 / 10.1 hp), less than the 15 / 11 kW (20.1 / 14.8 hp) left spindle
  • A-axis rapid is 20 m/min (787 in/min), half that of the other axes
  • A machine is either the tailstock version or the right-spindle version; the table lists them as separate models

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the TMX-2000 and the TMX-2000S?

The TMX-2000 has an NC servo tailstock. The TMX-2000S has a right spindle stock carrying a second 8 in (203 mm) chuck. That right spindle runs to 5,000 rpm, is rated 11 / 7.5 kW (14.8 / 10.1 hp) and has a 51 mm (2.0 in) bar capacity. The S version weighs 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) against 13,700 kg (30,203 lb).

02 What are the axis travels of the TMX-2000?

X is 640 mm (25.2 in), Y is 230 mm (9.1 in) and Z is 690 mm (27.2 in). The B axis has a 230° range, listed as ±115°. Rapid traverse is 40 m/min (1,575 in/min) on X, Y and Z, and 20 m/min (787 in/min) on the A axis.

03 How strong is the milling spindle?

The tool spindle runs to 12,000 rpm and is rated 11 kW (14.8 hp) at S3 25% and 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) continuous. The left turning spindle, for comparison, is rated 15 / 11 kW (20.1 / 14.8 hp) at 30-min against continuous. Heavy stock removal is better planned as turning, with milling kept to features and finishing.

04 How many tools does the TMX-2000 carry?

40 tools as standard, with 80 as an option. On a B-axis machine the same tool spindle holds turning tools and rotating tools, so the count has to cover both. For the TMX-2000S, where two chucks may each need their own roughing and finishing tools, the 80-tool option is worth checking against the tool list.

05 How does the TMX-2000 compare with the TMX-4000?

Both are listed with a 500 mm (19.7 in) maximum turning diameter and 40 tools as standard. The TMX-4000 is much longer, with 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of turning length, 10 in (254 mm) chucks, a 26 / 22 kW (34.9 / 29.5 hp) left spindle at 4,000 rpm and a weight of 17,000 kg (37,478 lb). The TMX-2000 turns 610 mm (24.0 in), uses 8 in (203 mm) chucks, and its 15 / 11 kW (20.1 / 14.8 hp) left spindle runs to 5,000 rpm.
