Overview
The DN Solutions SMX 2100 LS combines the long-bed turning length of the L variant with a sub spindle (the S designation), giving you 1,540 mm of turning length plus full back-working capability in a single machine. It's the configuration you want when parts need features on both ends and exceed the standard-bed turning length.
Both spindles deliver 22 kW (29.5 hp) at 5,000 RPM through 8-inch chucks, with 467 Nm of torque on each side. The sub spindle handles part pickup, back-facing, ID work on the second end, and finish operations while the B-axis milling head takes care of cross-drilling, angular features, and contouring. The milling spindle runs at 12,000 RPM with full 240-degree B-axis travel for genuine 5-axis simultaneous machining.
At 16,500 kg (36,376 lb), the LS weighs about 300 kg more than the L variant — that extra mass comes from the sub spindle assembly and its associated mechanicals. The footprint stays the same at 5,630 x 2,770 x 2,777 mm, so you don't sacrifice additional floor space to get the sub spindle capability.
The FANUC 31i-B5 control manages all axes including synchronized spindle handoffs for part transfer. This matters for production environments where cycle time and unattended operation are priorities. The LS configuration gives you the ability to complete long shaft-type parts — both ends machined, all milling features done — without any manual intervention between ops.
Shops running aerospace landing gear components, automotive transmission shafts, or oil and gas downhole tools will find the LS hits the right balance. It's more capable than the base SMX 2100 S (shorter bed) and more accessible than jumping to the SMX 2600 S or 3100 LS with their larger chuck platforms.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Long-bed plus sub spindle combination handles complete machining of long shaft parts on both ends without manual rechucking
- Matched 22 kW spindles on both sides enable balanced cutting for synchronized turning and seamless part transfer
- B-axis milling at 12,000 RPM provides genuine machining center capability for cross-drilling and angular features
- Same footprint as the SMX 2100 L — you get sub spindle capability without additional floor space
- FANUC 31i-B5 with CUFOS supports full 5-axis simultaneous machining and synchronized spindle handoffs
- Significantly lower price than the Mazak Integrex i-200S Long or DMG Mori CTX beta 800 with sub spindle
Limitations
- 8-inch chuck on both spindles limits workpiece diameter compared to the 10-inch SMX 2600 S platform
- 22 kW spindle power may feel light during heavy roughing on tough alloys compared to 30 kW machines in the SMX 2600/3100 class
- No lower turret — simultaneous turning and milling requires stepping up to the LST variant
- Extended bed length requires more floor space than the standard-bed SMX 2100 S

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The LS adds a sub spindle to the long-bed L configuration. Both have 1,540 mm turning length and dual spindles, but the LS designation specifically indicates the sub spindle is configured for automated part pickup and back-working — not just a tailstock with rotation. The LS weighs about 300 kg more and costs roughly $20-40K more than the L.
02
Yes. The right spindle on the LS matches the left at 5,000 RPM and 22 kW, so it handles turning, facing, boring, and finishing operations at full capability. It's not a reduced-power sub spindle — both sides deliver the same performance.
03
New SMX 2100 LS machines typically price between $300,000 and $420,000. Base configs start around $300K, with high-pressure coolant, probing, chip conveyor, and expanded tool magazines pushing toward $420K. Used Doosan-era PUMA SMX 2100 LS machines run $160,000 to $240,000 depending on condition and hours.
04
The FANUC 31i-B5 control manages synchronized spindle handoffs. The right spindle advances to the workpiece, clamps it, then the left spindle releases. Speed matching happens automatically to prevent damage during transfer. You program the handoff as part of the cycle, so it runs unattended.
