Overview
The Takamaz XT-8 is a compact, high-speed CNC lathe purpose-built for mass production of small turned parts. The machine's core design philosophy centers on minimizing non-cutting time, with every aspect from the rapid traverse rates to the turret indexing speed and the integrated gantry loader engineered to keep chips flying and parts flowing. For shops producing tens of thousands of simple turned parts per month, the XT-8 delivers production density that few competitors can match.
The 8-inch collet chuck and 3,500 RPM spindle (with 5,000 or 3,000 RPM options) powered by an 11/7.5 kW motor provide the speed and rigidity for production-rate turning of steel, aluminum, brass, and cast iron. The 100 mm spindle bore (120 mm optional) accommodates bar feeding for continuous production. Axis travels of 190 mm on X and 400 mm on Z cover the full range of short to medium-length small parts.
The standard 8-station turret handles most simple turning operations efficiently, with a 12-station upgrade available for shops needing additional tool positions. Rapid traverse rates of 18 m/min on X and 24 m/min on Z keep tool approach and retract times to a minimum. The compact 1,600 x 1,535 mm footprint allows multiple XT-8 machines to be arranged in dense cell configurations for parallel production.
The integrated gantry loader is standard equipment, not an aftermarket add-on. It shares the Fanuc 0i-TF Plus control with the machine axes for coordinated motion and simplified programming. The complete load-machine-unload cycle runs automatically, enabling true lights-out operation for small production parts.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Extremely compact 1,600 x 1,535 mm footprint enables high-density cell configurations for parallel production
- Integrated gantry loader as standard equipment delivers lights-out automation from day one
- Rapid traverse of 18/24 m/min on X/Z minimizes non-cutting time for maximum throughput
- Low acquisition cost of $90,000-$140,000 makes automated CNC turning accessible to smaller shops
- Fanuc 0i-TF Plus with Takamaz conversational programming simplifies setup for part families
- Optional 12-station turret and 120 mm spindle bore extend versatility beyond basic turning
Limitations
- Standard 8-station turret limits tool capacity for parts with many features
- No live tooling on standard configuration requires secondary operations for cross-holes and milling
- 3,500 RPM standard spindle speed may limit surface speed on small-diameter aluminum and brass parts
- Limited Takamaz brand recognition and service network outside Japan

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New Takamaz XT-8 machines typically price between $90,000 and $140,000 with the integrated gantry loader. The XT-8M with live tooling and XT-8MY with Y-axis cost $20,000-$60,000 more respectively. Used machines trade in the $35,000-$70,000 range.
02
The XT-8 is the base model with an 8-station turret for turning only. The XT-8M adds a 12-station turret with live tooling for cross-drilling and milling. The XT-8MY adds Y-axis travel and a more powerful spindle for off-center milling operations.
03
Both target high-volume small parts. The Miyano BNA offers sub-spindle and C-axis options for more complex parts. The XT-8 focuses on maximizing throughput on simpler parts with lower acquisition cost and integrated gantry loading.
04
Yes, the machine operates in manual chuck load mode with the loader parked. However, manual operation significantly reduces throughput and negates the machine automation advantage over conventional lathes.
